Anybody who has any interest in martial arts that is my age has seen the famous Bruce Lee film, "Enter The Dragon." Besides Baba Bruce, there were a number of other martial arts legends in the film, and one of them was Bob Wall, now an extremely spry 68 years old, and who could drop kick some mook butt in a New York second today, thirty five years after that film was made.

My conversation with Bob Wall has given me respect him and his family. He told me stories, jokes and wisdom like a whirlwind and I was having a little hard time trying to keep up with him. It's really heart warming to learn that a known martial artist values his family, as he actually brought them with him on this trip. I met his beautiful wife and daughters.

Bob's daughters are as tough as him. He taught them how to defend themselves in times of trouble. Any baddies who will attempt to touch them will surely get their bones broken.

Every girl born in this country isn't lucky enough to have Bob Wall as a father, a guy who likes strong, smart women. As he says, "I knew a lot of broads, but I never met anyone as smart or strong as my wife of 38 years. I wanted my daughters to be just like their mother, who is responsible for all that Ive accomplished in my life."

My encounter with Bob gave me insights regarding self defense for women. For parents who don't know how to teach their daughter to break bones, you may at least give them an equalizer that will give the same results that you want. Maybe some pepper spray or a stun gun.

You may put down a goon at 25 feet, and you still have at least 7 shots to finish the mission and you can hit from any position, even upside down.

In the near future you will hear more about Bob Wall and his friends, as they are not quite ready for an exit, stage left yet, and that's a good thing.

Some Important Tips for Bonsai Gardeners

Do not feed after re potting for the first month, but allow the plant to become established and comfortable in its fresh soil. Water during this period, but only enough to keep the soil from drying out completely. The young tree has, in effect, suffered a considerable operation and a short period of rest and relaxation will be necessary before it regains its appetite and interest in life.

It is mainly in the summer that new growth will be seen. This must not be allowed to get out of hand. It is much easier for you and much better for the tree to trim and prune gradually and in small pieces rather than to have to amputate wholesale. In the case of evergreens, mainly conifers, when new growth is seen during the summer cut or pinch away the growing bud at the ends of stems where this is necessary to restrict growth.

Do not carry this process too far; to remove half or so of the soil is sufficient. Now look at the roots and cut back cleanly those thicker roots until they will fit comfortably into the depth of the container. The longer, finer, fibrous roots should just be snipped until they too fit into the container. Glean the container thoroughly, cover the holes again with the zinc discs or other protective substances and then cover the base of the container with sharp sand.

If the bending is not too drastic it can be carried out in one operation, but if a considerable angle is to be made it is better to do this by degrees, bending the limb gradually over a period of several months until you have achieved the results you seek. The copper wire will tarnish and take on the colour of the tree bark to some extent, so it will be quite unobtrusive and will not spoil the appearance of the young tree. This training harness may have to be left on the tree for several years as the process of shaping gradually takes place. It will do no harm to the tree so long as it is watched carefully.

Once the roots have begun to grow and spread again they will hold the tree firmly in position and the guys can be removed. Because the soil mixture is fresh it will not cling together and it will be unwise to water by total immersion, so instead stand the container in a bucket or other vessel of water which reaches almost but not quite to rim level. The moisture will be attracted through the drainage holes upwards through the soil and when the soil surface darkens and appears moist the container and its tree can be removed to drain.

Having carried out the initial training, leave the young plant alone to grow for the next few months. Do not constantly fuss over it but let it settle clown to grow strong and sturdy. It will not require re-potting for at least a year if the process was carried out correctly in the first place and so long as adequate water and care is given to the plant.

Stage 4: Quitting

The 4th stage in the quit smoking stages is actually quitting. At this point, the individual is committed to kick the habit and has even taken action to fulfill this plan. As this specific person stops smoking, he/she has to face withdrawal, exert effort not to give in to the often compelling desire to smoke again, and basically try to adjust to a smoke-free life. The 4th stage can last from 6 months to 1 year.

Final Stage: Post-Quitting Maintenance

The 5th and final stage in the stop smoking process is known as post quitting maintenance, which generally starts one year after smoking cessation. At this stage, a relapse is entirely possible. Around seventy five percent of individuals who quit smoking are susceptible to resuming smoking in the initial year of the process. Nevertheless, this does not mean that their efforts were wasted, since researches demonstrate that it takes about 3 tries to completely stop smoking. Though a relapse is commonly considered as a a few steps back, this should in no way deter any smoker from attempting to stop smoking again and, consequently, trying harder the next time.

If we continue to use commercial greenhouses as a guide to our own practices in growing plants in our own homes we shall find that although facilities always exist for the provision of good ventilation, the houses in which plants are grown are always suffused with a humid atmosphere, sometimes so humid as to be uncomfortable to humans.

Now I would be the last to suggest that we subject ourselves in our homes to uncomfortable conditions for the sake of our plants for there is no question that as humans we prefer a much drier air than do our plants.

Alternatively, if the plants are suitable to this treatment, move them to a part of the room where they look across the room to the light and thus face the inhabitants all the time.

It is possible to buy quite cheaply a hygrometer which will register the relative humidity of the air in a room. It is not necessary to own a hygrometer in order to grow plants well, but the possession of one does give an indication and a reminder when humidity has dropped to a lower level than is desired, for our bodies are more sensitive to warmth than to humidity and where we quickly notice that we are warm or cold we cannot determine changes in the moisture content of the air.

The simplest, though not always the most practical, is to spray these plants daily or at longer intervals, using an atomiser or fine spray specially made for this purpose. But although this is probably the most efficient way of providing essential humidity for individual plants, it is as likely as not the least efficient or tolerable operation for the housewife, for inevitably walls or furniture catch some of the drifting residue of moisture.

The entire question of light, then, for plants in the home is a vital matter and great attention should be given to it if the plants are to flourish. It is no accident that commercial greenhouses in which house and other plants are grown are invariably painted white if they are painted at all. It is also no accident that all modern greenhouse design tends to slim or even do away with glazing bars, upright supports and any obstruction to the light so that the greatest possible quantity of daylight can be admitted, even though this may on occasion be reduced in intensity with shading.

We have all seen evidences of plants that have been grown carefully on the plant nursery and more recklessly when purchased and brought into the home. The leaves suddenly double in size, growth is lanky because feeding outbalances the amount of light available, stems that should be sturdy and strong become weak, sappy and bending.

More indoor plants die from over-watering and over-feeding than from any other cause and although it is impossible to lay down hard and fast rules about frequencies and quantities it is possible to suggest most strongly both that a starvation diet is to be preferred to enforced gluttony and that a period of starvation is far more likely to cure a sickly plant than overdoses of water or food.

If a plant is given too much water the liquid fills the air spaces in the pot and the plant cannot breathe. This is one reason why the little and often practice of watering should be discouraged in favour of the seldom and thorough doctrine.

Most plants should be allowed to become thirsty before they are watered. A domestic pet such as a cat or dog will refuse or ignore drink if it does not require it, but a plant has to suffer excess quantities willy-nilly and can only show its resentment by turning sickly. All plants are susceptible to pests and diseases. Good cultivation is the best way to prevent or deal with them. Insects that prey on roses differ from country to country but include aphids, thrips, and sawflies.

Growing Garden Bulbs

Not very many tulips grow well indoors, so make sure when you order for this purpose. They grow better in garden soil than in bulb fibre and will take between two and three months in your cool, dark place before they will be ready to be lifted and brought indoors.

By the time the flower stem is about a foot or so in height move the pot to a good south facing window to give the plant as much light as possible. Keep watering well while the magnificent flowers are showing and when they have finally died, cut the flower stems cleanly away at the base and continue the watering together with a weekly feed of balanced plant fertilizer.

Some of the smaller bulbs, such as crocus, snowdrops, scillas and muscari should not be brought into the warmth and the light until the flowers are beginning to show colour. For some reason yellow crocuses resent forcing indoors, so choose other colors for this purpose or lift yellow varieties in the garden and pot them up at the last moment as they are beginning to show color and then bring them into the house.

Many other bulbs in the garden can be dug up, potted and brought into the home for the final glory of their flowering and then returned to their original outdoor space to continue their lives and prepare for next year's flowering.

The Blood lily, hacmanthus, should be potted in the autumn or spring, depending on whether they are early flowering types or not. The bulbs should be placed so that half the bulb protrudes above the rim of the pot.

These specially prepared crowns come in a little carton, requiring only the addition of water to start them into growth. Because they can be timed so accurately they are wonderful for birthday presents or other special occasions.

Important Tips for Your Dish Gardens

The method for arranging plants in a container still in their pots is slightly different, partly because the roots will still be confined inside their pots and not spreading about inside the container soil and partly because the main purpose of using this process is to allow the easy replacement of some of the pots when this appears to be necessary.

Remember that there must be allowance for a comparatively deep layer of drainage material, so take at least one inch, preferably more, off the depth to permit this. In a really large container the soil can be allowed to rise to a slight mound at one or two places, but there must always be sufficient space between soil and rim to hold the water that will be poured on it from time to time.

Now pour in your soil or peat compost and level it until you have about an inch or more, again depending on the depth and shape of the container, above the drainage layer. Knock your first plant from its pot, tease some of the soil away from the root ball very gently and place it in the container, spreading out the roots and adding a little soil on top of them to anchor the plant. Do the same with the remainder of the pots, allowing sufficient space between the plants themselves so that they can be seen clearly, out allowing the roots to spread over and under each other so long as there is plenty of the compost between them. Finally top up with soil, firming it gently around each plant so that it is steady and well anchored.

When the plants are knocked from their pots and planted in the container there can be only very slight opportunity to plant at different levels and at different angles. But when pots themselves are plunged this opportunity is given to us and we should take every advantage of it.

Plants can be leaned at any angle you like to present the most attractive appearance and where desired one plant can be placed lower or higher than the others depending on the depth of the container. In others words much greater opportunity exists to arrange the plants to obtain the most decorative results.

If you do not do this you may find that you change your mind halfway through the operation and have to lift one or two of the plants which are already in place. If you are all ready, put your layer of drainage material in place. This can be washed clinker, pebbles, pea gravel, broken crocks or anything that will leave the base of the container so that water will rush through to it. Among this material sprinkle a few pellets of charcoal. This will help to absorb any odours that may come from any excess moisture trapped at the base of the container.

All about cacti and succulents

If we buy from a specialist we can order types which will flower regularly, we can even order according to color, shape and size of bloom. But if we buy haphazard from a market stall, chain store or florist shop we must take our chance.

However, cacti are such fascinating plants even without their flowers and so easy to grow and keep that they are well worth while. They are ideal plants for the smaller home and the town flat, for as a rule they take up little space and make little demand on time or attention. Some can grow very large indeed, but the way we grow them and the facilities we offer tend generally to keep them small, slow growing and convenient.

There are, I believe, two main reasons for the popularity of cacti and other succulents in the home. The first is the odd shapes in which so many of them come : tall, short, round, flat, rectangular, gnarled and twisted, prostrate, climbing, weeping. Some of them are particularly appealing simply because of these odd shapes.

So although we should water them quite freely in the summer, for the remainder of the year they should be allowed to become almost dust dry at the roots before watering again and in the winter water should be withheld to the extent that they almost begin to shrink and shrivel before being given a drink. Too much water at any time will lead to root or stem rot. Hence their soil mixture should be exceptionally sharp and well drained.

Most of the plants we know as cacti are more properly terrestrial cacti, this is, they grow on the ground, but a number are also epiphytic, growing in the accumulated rubbish of dropped leaves and other debris high up in trees.

Epiphytic cacti are not parasites, like our European mistletoe, for their roots do not grow into and absorb nourishment from the tree; instead they use the tree merely as a home, their roots taking moisture and food from the rotting vegetation. As might be expected, epiphytic cacti require different treatment from terrestrial types.

Good Tips on How to Grow Fruit Trees

The soil in which the cuttings are to be struck should be free from perennial weeds. The rows should be 18 inches apart, and the cuttings should be 5 inches apart in the rows.

Leave the rooted plant in position until the third week of November, when you can sever it from its parent about 2 inches above soil level, but leave it where it is until the following early April when it can be transplanted to the spot where it is to grow.

The gardener should tread firmly on either side of the row afterwards. Incidentally, it is quite a good thing to put down a line first, so as to make certain that the row is absolutely straight.

Leave the cuttings in position until the following autumn, and by then they should have rooted well and new branches should have been made. In fact, under ideal conditions each cutting may have produced branches 2-21 feet long. It helps to this end if sedge peat is used as a mulch, on either side of the rows, to the depth of an inch. Poor results invariably occur owing to shortage of moisture, and mulchings ensure good results. In very dry weather it may be necessary to water copiously during the summer, while in May the author has known it advisable to shade the cuttings with hessian or sacking.

Growing gooseberries is easy. Having selected your healthy bushes, cut off with a sharp knife pieces of one-year-old wood at least 12 inches long, preferably 15 inches. It is important to take these cuttings before the leaves fall in the autumn, say in October rather than in November, as in the case of blackcurrants and redcurrants. The wood chosen should be well-ripened and the cuttings should be prepared by using a sharp- bladed knife to make a cut just below a bud at the base and just above a bud at the top end. Using the same knife, remove carefully all the buds which are found in the axils of the prickles or spines, except the top three.

After a year suckers will start to be produced around the original cane that has been planted and some of these may be cut off in the late autumn, together with their roots, for planting out in a new row.

When you buy a climber such as an ivy, cissus or philodendron it will probably be trained to a central cane in the flower pot. This is purely for ease of growing, marketing and transporting and there is no reason why you should continue to grow the plant in this rigid manner.

Instead, when you get it home loosen the ties and arrange the several trails in a softer and more attractive pattern. By all means keep the central cane or even replace it with a longer specimen if you like, but consider doing away with it and replacing it with an attractively shaped and textured piece of driftwood or a cane or ironwork fan to support the upward twining trails.

Little garden plants, the first snowdrops or primroses, can be dug from the garden and placed inside a plastic bag to be planted' in a little plant arrangement as a reassurance of the coming of spring. When the plants have finished the plastic bags can be removed again and the bulbs replanted in the garden ready for flowering again next year, for their brief glory indoors will have clone them no significant harm.

Bulb flowers, in fact, are excellent means of decorating the home and at the same time bringing fascination as they grow and open. Methods of cultivation are discussed in another chapter, but it might be well here to discuss means of using them in the so-called ' pot-et-flour' manner, combining flowers with foliage plants.

One suggestion which is both simple and satisfying is to insert several cuttings of a sprawling plant such as tradescantia or ivy around the rim of a low bowl. In the centre of the bowl insert an empty flower pot. When your potted indoor bulbs are beginning to reach the flowering stage remove the empty pot and replace it with one holding the bulb, just about to come into flower.

Or reverse the process, and when planting bulbs for forcing indoors, leave a little space in some section of the bowl so that a foliage plant can be inserted in this space when the bulbs are about to give of their best. Do not be afraid of taking advantage of the comparatively brief lives of both cut flowers and bulb flowers. In fact take advantage of every possible means of bringing added color and gaiety into the home during the dark days of winter.

Common names are Cauliflower, Broccoli (Eng.); Chou-fleur (Fr.); Coliflor (Sp.); Blumenkohl (Ger.); Bloemkook (Neth.).

The common names are Leaf Mustard, Indian Mustard, Leaf Mustard Cabbage, Mustard Greens, Chinese Mustard, White Mustard (Eng.); Moutarde de Chine (Fr.); Mostaza de la Tierra (Sp.); Kai Choy, Kaai Ts'oi (Mal.); Sesawi (Indon.); Sarson Kaag

Three main forms of Kale exist; Thousand-headed, Marrow Stem and Curled Kale; the latter is most often used as a vegetable. The selections referred to as Collards have smooth leaves in a rosette at the stem apex and can withstand higher temperatures than the other Kales.

In general, Cauliflowers require more fertile soils than cabbages; cultivars suitable for growing in lowland tropical areas have been selected but cool conditions are normally required for optimum growth and development, such as are found in elevations above 1000 m. There are three main groups, classed according to curd development: those which will form curds and flower in hot weather conditions at fairly low elevations; the medium types which require cool conditions; and the late-maturing types which take a long time to develop curds and also require relatively low temperatures, below 25C, for curd development. At temperatures in excess of 25C, curds may become discoloured, leafy and loose. Dry, hot weather encourages the production of small, hard curds. Optimum soil pH is in the region of 6.0-7.0, acid soils are sometimes treated with lime or limestone if the pH value is too low.

Areas of cultivation is South-east Asia, including south China, Indonesia and Malaysia; East and West Africa; West Indies; and many tropical areas where it is normally treated as a perennial crop, being propagated by cuttings.

On soils which are high in organic content, NPK is usually applied before planting. Additional dressings of nitrogenous fertilizer are beneficial up to the formation of the curds. A shortgage of nitrogen during early growth may lead to the condition known as `buttoning',Ahe plants becoming stunted with reduced leaf development. Since the Cauliflower has a high demand for magnesium, boron and molybdenum, deficiencies may occur and can be corrected by the application of dolomitic limestone, borax or ammonium molybdate at the recommended rates. Soil acidity is also linked with the availability of these elements, particularly magnesium and molybdenum.

Seed is sown in nursery beds and transplanted to rows 45-60 cm apart, plants 30-40 cm apart, or a square planting of 30 cm X 30 cm. Cuttings of lateral shoots may be inserted in nursery beds and transplanted. At a density of 100 000 plants/ha, 1 kg of seed is required. Irrigation is required at regular intervals since the crop has a high demand for water due to the extensive leaf area developed. NPK fertilizer should be applied before planting, with subsequent dressings of a nitrogenous fertilizer.

Bottle Garden Tips

Bulbs of the Jacobean lily, Sprekelia formosissima, should be potted, two-thirds into the soil, in February and watered freely when growth begins to show. When the flower spike begins to appear is the time to begin feeding and when the flowers have finished in the autumn the bulb should be allowed to dry out and rest.

Bottle gardens are, of course, a derivation of the old Victorian Wardian case, devised by Dr Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, 1791 - 1868. But of the few people who can picture and understand the principles of the Wardian case, even fewer realize that this is merely an elegant version of a much more plebian and practical instrument.

Clivias do not die clown in the same way as most other bulbs so should never be allowed to become quite so dry. Pot bulbs in February and water straight away. Give them plenty of light and regular feeding when the shoots are growing well.

Plant explorers and the several knowledgeable and fanatical nurserymen of 150 years ago were distressed to find that although many hitherto unknown plants were being discovered in distant countries, it was almost impossible to bring them back for further cultivation here, for everything was against them: distance, time, change of temperature and atmosphere, salt-laden winds and lack of knowledge of the sailors in whose care the plants had to rest during the voyage. So Ward devised his case.

Basically it consisted of a box of any suitable size with a timber base, glass sides and top. The sides were hermetically sealed by putty and only the top could be removed for the necessary packing and unpacking. There were one or two small ventilation holes, but apart from these the cases were completely sealed.

The bulb flowers are all what we might call perennial, for they will flower indoors year after year. There are many more which can decorate our homes for the period when they are at their best, but which must be grown under the kinder conditions prevailing in a greenhouse. These include some irises, some lilies, arum lilies (zantedeschia), tritonia, schizostylis, acidanthera and some orchids such as the pretty little bletia.

Growing Plants from Throw Aways

Of the citrus fruits tangerines appear to give the most attractive plants, for the leaves are a dark, shining green rather than pale and dull.

In fact such plants seldom grow for more than a few years as conditions are very much against them. But against this we must set the charm of germinating these seeds and watching the pretty little plants grow upwards.

Avocado stones can be planted in soil in the usual manner, but they will also grow just as well if they are grown like a hyacinth bulb, suspended with just the base touching the water. Always plant or grow with the more pointed end facing upwards. The stone will gradually split down the center and the growing shoot will appear from this point.

Some importers of these fruits have obviously learnt that young and saleable plants can be grown in this manner and in the past year or so a very large number of fruits are being sold with the heart of the tuft removed, obviously for this purpose. So only if the tuft at the top is complete with its centre and green and fresh looking, should you attempt to grow a plant from it.

Apples, pears and plums can all be grown quite easily and none need any special treatment. If seeds are germinated and plants grown for some months indoors it is little use trying to plant the young seedlings in the garden after they have lost their early attraction. They do not take kindly to the transformation in their living conditions, and in any case plants grown from these seeds are not true to type, by which I mean that they will not necessarily produce plants of the same variety as the parent.

After a few weeks roots will begin to show and the young plant as it then is can be potted up in a good, rich but well drained soil mixture. John Innes or Levington composts can be used, but as the tuft is apt to be top-heavy the latter is really too light to hold the plant securely until deeper roots have been formed. It is better to use John Innes with an added handful of sharp sand to increase the drainage.

Watering Systems for Your Houseplants

Some automatic watering systems incorporate a tiny water window near the base of the container so that it is possible at a glance to see whether the reservoir requires replenishing with water.

Only after the first few months is it really necessary to feed your plants, which proves quite conclusively that the nurseryman who propagated the plants in the first place used a good, rich soil with plenty of nourishment in it. I have known of cases where plants have been maintained even for years without feeding. It is true that these plants could have been larger but at least they were quite healthy.

Fortunately only a very small proportion of the plants available for sale are of poor quality and in almost every case these plants, coming to us usually through chain stores, were in good, sturdy condition when they left the nursery and have been the victims of an almost inevitable ignorance and lack of care while on sale in crowded, overheated conditions. Yet even these plants will frequently pick up and recover themselves when they receive a little care and attention.

When we talk about soils for pot plants we should more properly use the term composts, compositions composed of various constituents, of which soil is probably the most important. For all soil was once rock. Rain, frost, sun, subterranean disturbance, bacteria, animal products and even animals and plants themselves have over the centuries gradually broken clown the surface rock to form soil. These rock particles can vary in size from stones and pebbles to a very fine substance almost like powder which is so fine that under the influence of water it binds together like glue and forms clay.

Pots that have been plunged inside other and larger containers with the space between the two packed with water retentive material such as peat will be able to live for a comparatively long period if they have been watered thoroughly and the peat or other material has been well moistened.

But the rock particles obviously vary considerably in size, so we get stones and gravels, defined as having particles larger than two millimetres and so useless to us.

All dish gardens, bowls, troughs and the like normally have no drainage holes, which means that very careful attention must be paid to a drainage layer when planting and that thereafter watering must be carried out with reference to this lack of efficient drainage.

In the hallway leading to the studio where I write these words, on the sill of a west facing window stands a little oyster shell, some two inches in diameter and perhaps half an inch deep. In this, in about a tablespoon of Levington compost, two little succulents have been growing for more than a year, nourished only by a few drops of rain water each week.

Actually there are several reasons why it is a good thing to group plants together, reasons in addition to the desire to gain greater pleasure and value. In the first place each plant occupies a certain area around its perimeter. If two or more plants are placed together the total area for, say, three plants is little more than that required for one, so space is saved, always a valuable commodity today.

Again, plants are of benefit to each other if placed in close proximity, for the moist air transpired from the leaves tends to be wafted in the air over neighbouring plants, to their benefit. Still another benefit is in the saving of time, for where several plants are placed together they can be tended so much more quickly.

There are two ways in which plants can be grouped together in a collection. They can be knocked from their pots and planted together in soil, compost or peat and grouped together in a tasteful arrangement, or their pots can be plunged in peat or some other moisture retentive material inside the trough, bowl, pot, jar or any other container. The first method is frequently called making a dish (or trough, bowl, pot or jar) garden and the second is usually known as making a plant arrangement.

When plants are knocked from their pots and planted together they tend to make a more or less permanent garden, whereas if they are plunged still in their pots they can easily be removed at any time and replaced with another plant.

I'm off for another trip to Long Island, where I'll be settling for a while. Hopefully the sunshine will be settling there too since these bones don't much like the cold anymore.

Today I found an interesting article published in the first issue of Sports Health: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach. It's a medical publication that probably wouldn't have much appeal for sports fans.

I mean the title alone proves my point: "Evaluation of Lipid Profiles and the Use of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acid in Professional Football Players." Most people would run for the hills, but I eat this stuff up. And you get to benefit from my nerdy pursuits.

To sum up the article, 36 Steelers were provided with pharmaceutical grade fish oil, and then given a VAP(R)Cholesterol Test. The researchers were looking for emerging cardiovascular risk factors, and determining if omega 3 EFAs (essential fatty acids), the kind found in pharmaceutical grade fish oil, can reduce these factors.

During the study each participant received 2560 mg of DHA/EPA omega 3 fatty acid supplements.

According to Dr. James Erlich, the Chief Medical Officer of Atherotech, a partner in the study, professional football players are statistically at higher than normal risk for future cardiovascular disease and sudden heart attack.

This doesn't surprise me, judging by the bodies when they line up to play. These guys are massive, and linemen are considered "light" at 280 pounds these days. A 300 pound lineman is now common. When their careers end, the sheer body mass catches up with them.

The VAP Tests determined that pharmaceutical grade fish oil improved good cholesterol in Steeler players, and lowered damaging particles and triglycerides. Elevated levels of triglycerides (ie., animal fats) are associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

A Fruit Garden

The trouble with walls is that they are apt to be like blotting paper, and suck up much of the soil water. This of course they evaporate. The soil at the base of a wall is therefore particularly dry.

Furthermore, a wall will shelter the soil for a foot or two at the base of it, from rain, and thus it is necessary to adopt some system to ensure that the roots of trees growing against walls get the moisture they need. Some people for this reason bury 3-inch agricultural drainpipes upright in the soil, 3 feet apart and a foot away from the wall, and then water can be poured into these sometimes so as to wet the soil below.

An east wall will grow pears like Conference, Glou Morceau and Marie Louise; plums like Victoria, Oullin's Golden Gage, and Denniston's Superb Gage; cherries such as Emperor Francis and Early Rivers as well as the redcurrants and gooseberries recommended for the north wall. A west wall will grow dessert pears, first-class dessert plums, dessert cherries providing pollinating pears are planted, and really first-class dessert apples. In the south such a wall will grow peaches, nectarines and apricots also.

Before the trees are planted the gardener should nail wood battens 11 inches wide and inches thick against the wall, 8 feet apart. Strong ex-telephone wire should then be stretched tightly in between these battens, 9 inches apart, and the branches as they grow are tied to the wires. Always plant the tree so that its base is about 8 inches from the base of the wall, and when the branches are trained on the wires, these are some inches from the wall, and this narrow air space does help in the control of red spider.

The nuisance of growing apples on walls is that they are apt to get red spider rather badly, and to prevent this it is necessary to syringe the under surfaces of the leaves regularly, with plenty of water.

In a very dry summer this may have to be done two or three times a week in the evening time.

Mealy bugs are sometimes to be seen on many different kinds of plants, recognizable by the white, waxy wool in which they hide. They are difficult to remove but must not be allowed to remain on the plants, for they secrete some sort of honeydew which becomes attacked by a fungus. Scrape them off as well as possible with a matchstick dipped in white oil (Volck) solution and then spray the plant with a systemic insecticide. Mealy bugs sometimes get into the most impenetrable places on cacti, where they are almost impossible to remove by hand.

Scale is another insect difficult to dislodge. This settles on the undersides of leaves, often on or beside a main rib, juicy and succulent, where it sucks away at the sap and leaves a slightly paler portion around it. With a really young tree it is unnecessary, indeed unwise, to grow it from the beginning in a precious, decorative, tray-like container. Grow it instead in an ordinary but small flower pot until it is large enough to begin the training process.

If it is out of doors in a porch or on the terrace, make sure that the sun will not strike too strongly on it for long periods and that it is protected from any particularly strong winds such as sometimes whistle around corners or through gaps in the building or vegetation.

Subsequently your aim in looking after your bonsai specimen should be to maintain it in good health and to restrict its growth both above and below soil as much as possible to its present size and shape. So gently pinch out or cut away any new growth that tends to alter the shape and proportions of the plant.

Note carefully the type of soil in which it is growing: leafmould, peat, calcareous rock particles, and scoop up a little of the same soil to use in your potting compost. Dig up the plant very carefully, preferably with a good root ball and certainly with no essential damage to the roots. You may find that even a tiny tree has at its base a strong and deep growing tap root.

It will not be necessary on each occasion to water by total immersion, although it is a good thing to do this if possible perhaps once a month during the summer. Instead water the soil carefully and thoroughly, as frequently as once a day during the summer if the plant is out of doors and exposed to drying winds and sunshine.

You can, of course, grow your trees from seed, which will allow you the pleasure of starting right from the beginning. One or two specialist seedmen list seeds of a very wide variety of trees suitable for dwarfing. Many of these seeds are slow to germinate and develop, so if you intend to adopt this process it may take you five years or more to obtain young trees firm and strong enough to stand the dwarfing and training process.

A Few Tips on Caring for Your Cacti

Although the epiphyllums are cacti they are different in appearance, having long, narrow stems almost with the appearance of leaves, (in fact these are sometimes called ' leaf-flowering ') and their method of treatment is entirely different, for as we have seen earlier they grow on trees in a decomposed leaf mold compost and they consequently require more water and less intense light than their terrestrial cousins. On the other hand their stems are fleshy and capable of absorbing and holding considerable quantities of moisture, so they can live for long periods without watering and although they prefer some shade they will not suffer unduly if subjected to intense sunlight.

It is perfectly true that some Christmas cacti flower happily year after year without a summer in the garden and without being any cooler than the normal warmth of the living-rooms. It will be found, however, that under these circumstances room temperatures almost invariably drop during the night to approximately the same level as those out of doors, and this is probably the explanation of the successful flowering of plants which never leave the room.

Bud development is largely influenced by photosynthetic processes and is therefore dependent on the length of daylight. Plants are divided according to their response to long or short days. Some can adjust themselves to artificial ' day' length, but others cannot, The Christmas cactus needs a short day to flower well and artificial light in living-rooms can inhibit flower development and opening.

As each bud grows and develops it receives minutely different amounts of light, dependent upon its position on the stem and distance from the light source. It is helpful (though not always vital) to maintain this pattern, and for this reason once bud initiation has begun and the plant is brought indoors it should not be moved from its position until flowering of the entire plant has been completed, a matter which can sometimes take several weeks.

These hybrids have been given cultivar names and it will be of little help to mention them here. If you are interested, go to a specialist grower and to his catalogues.

But unfortunately, although so similar in so many respects, the Christmas cactus that I mentioned earlier will not be found among the epiphyllums but under the name zygocactus or possibly schlumbergera. This gorgeous plant sometimes disappoints its owners by failing to flower at all, or by dropping its buds when it is about to flower. These faults are easily overcome with attention to two minor factors.

Frozen air is rather like water in that it flows down to the lowest point. If, when it reaches the bottom of your garden, it cannot get away because of a high fence or wall, then it will collect in this low part and may cause trouble. Fruit growers always fear frosts at blossoming time and soon afterwards.

If therefore you have a large garden and there's any choice at all, aim to plant your fruit on the higher parts, and not in what some people call frost-holes. Hedges will even hold up frozen air-temporarily at any rate, and in gardens which abut on to a road it is often possible and advisable to cut away part of the hedge, so as to allow the frozen air to flow out on to the roadway, and thus be dispersed, which deals with the culture of apples, for there are varieties that flower late like Crawley Beauty, and Royal Jubilee, which should be grown in frosty situations.

However deeply the normal gardener cultivates, he cannot possibly get down to a 10-foot depth, where the roots will undoubtedly be, and therefore he must rely on the soil fungi and bacteria, plus the worms, to carry out the improvement of his soil where it is most needed. Worms will carry plant foods, applied as a surface dressing, deep down into the soil, and it is there that it will become available to the roots when droughty weather may make the top few inches too dry for fibrous roots to feed in.

We must therefore start by choosing the higher part of the garden if this is possible; we must reduce frost liability if possible by allowing the frozen air to escape, and, when air drainage is not possible, some covering must be given to the fruit we wish to protect.

Sometimes it is absolutely necessary owing to a very high bird population to plant the soft fruits in a cage. Usually this applies particularly to redcurrants, raspberries and strawberries, but the writer has known cases where the birds have gone for blackcurrants and blackberries also. A cage is somewhat expensive to erect, but as it is reasonably permanent, it should last twenty years or so. Some people like to have a wire-netting surround and a fish-netting top. Then each winter the fish netting can be removed for drying before being stored away.

How different the surface soil is in between the rhubarb plants in a bed where no digging is done, and where mulchings are given with compost or dung each year. Under such conditions the soil is friable and open, and can be raked for producing a tilth at any time.

It is that in general the darker the leaf and the tougher the foliage the less light a plant will require. It makes sense, doesn't it?

Most of the ivies we grow in our homes will adapt themselves to outdoor living after a brief period and the effect of the better light is astonishing. They grow lusher, more exuberantly and they produce flowers and fruit prodigiously because they have better light.

On the other hand, because light in our homes is so much poorer than light outside, these dark leaved plants are the perfect ones for beginners in the house plant world or for those of us who for one reason or another seem unable to keep plants alive or healthy for more than a few weeks.

People who did not have success in indoor gardening are those who find difficulty, those who fail, those who yearn frustratedly to grow plants, that cause me most concern.

We have seen that in general, light is more important for house plants than warmth, feeding or even water, although it must be obvious that some of all of these are necessary for the long life and healthy growth of all plants. But it is difficult to realize that as humans we are tremendously adaptable, much more so than less sophisticated plants.

It will, in fact, be absorbed by the peat or other material. Nov so far as humidity is concerned, this moist material at the base of the plant will gradually dry out and in doing so the moisture it gives off will drift slowly up and around the plant, thus giving the plant its own micro-climate of humidity.

This being so, there is another method of providing this booster treatment. This method is generally suitable only for comparatively small plants and is excellent for saint paulias and their like. Stand the plant pot inside another pot or container which has no holes in its base and place this in the center of a large, wide bowl. Pour boiling water into this bowl. Steam will rise and surround the plant, yet no hot water will get to it. Leave until the water is cold and then replace the plant in its original position.

There is, so far as I am aware, no exception to this rule. Some plants in their original wild homes grew in dense jungle, shaded and obscure with colourful and dramatic flowers in almost every case it will be -found that the flowers actually appear only when light is good enough, as, for example, when a climber succeeds in twining its way up the trunk of a tree to emerge near the top level of the forest foliage where the light is considerably brighter. Or the flowers may appear only on the plant that grows in or near a clearing or opening. The dramatic Swiss Cheese plant, Monstera deliciosa, is an example.

With its huge, slashed and holed leaves this is a favourite among the more decorative and exciting larger plants.

It will grow to 50 ft. or more under helpful circumstances, up a wall and along the ceiling quite happily given normal minimal care. But in a normal room it will seldom flower and fruit, simply because the light is not good enough for it.
