Great Online Relationships

By Charlie Reese

Most people in the dating scene try to project a pretty independent attitude. After all, that seems to be what gets your attention. No one wants to be tied down by a codependent relationship, but after the initial thrill of the chase that is often what happens. Codependency in relationships is a serious and common problem.

It probably has something to do with the way that we are made. The bonding instinct is very strong in humans. Although not all people want to find a permanent partner, most do it sooner or later. From living together and depending on each other to becoming codependent is a small step. Usually this involves a few simple changes. Instead of enjoying and craving the other's attention, you come to depend on it. Instead of encouraging each other to grow, you excessively comfort each other. Soon, both people in the relationship become unable to function without each other. They may become emotionally destructive and undermine each other, yet they can't break out of the cycle. It repeats over and over again until they got help or the relationship ends.

Of course, codependency in relationships is not always a relationship ender. In fact, that can be one of the most serious problems. Codependent relationships can sometimes continue indefinitely no matter what either person does. It is so easy to get used to thinking and act like nothing is wrong, after all. All relationships require a lot of compromises as a basic part of them, so it can sometimes be difficult to determine when a compromise goes too far. Many people don't see when they start putting up with more than they should.

There are quite a few good tips for defeating codependency in relationships. One of them involves developing healthy outside lives. Many couples like to do a lot of things together, but you should not do everything with your significant other or spouse. Each person needs to have activities that he or she enjoys on his or her own. Healthy and honest discussion is also a possible antidote. It can do a lot to resolve the tensions that often leads to codependence in relationships.

Nonetheless, sometimes nothing but therapy will work. Sometimes codependency is really a sign of much deeper troubles, and both partners in the relationship need to get outside help to really resolved all of the underlying issues. It is never a sure thing, but if both partners are willing to work with a trained relationship counselor, usually it will help.

Coolmore Stud - the early years

By James Wilson

Owners and trainers of racehorses have a new set of dreams with every season bringing a fresh crop of thoroughbreds. Although each generation of horses is restricted to a single Classic campaign, in the year-round whirl of purchasing bloodstock history does have a habit of repeating itself...

Back in July 1985, at Keeneland Sales, Lexington, Kentucky, a group of sombre-faced Irishmen accompanied by a high-rolling entourage headed by Robert Sangster lifted the already balmy bloodstock market to a new height when paying $13.1 million for a Northern Dancer colt subsequently named Seattle Dancer. The purchase - for which the billionaire Maktoum family of Dubai came off second best - was made on behalf of Coolmore, a stud operation just ten years old but already the largest and most internationally-aware outfit in thoroughbred breeding.

In the mid 1970's Coolmore principal John Magnier had outlined his plans for the stud in a rare interview.

"If we keep stallions here and stand them very cheaply...in a short time we would be buying tenth-rate stallions " and when we went to the yearling sales nobody would want our produce," he said. "We have got to avail ourselves of the outside markets and stand stallions which will have international appeal as well."

That evening at Keeneland was all part of the Coolmore masterplan and those who had known Magnier, a tall imposing figure with a steely gaze, from an early age never doubted that he was going to be a big success in life. Magnier grew up at Grange Stud close to Fermoy in Co Cork in an area that had been synonymous with National Hunt breeding for years. Born on February 10 1948, and educated privately at Glenstal Abbey in Co Limerick, he left school aged 15 following the death of his father Tom.

He helped his mother Evie run Grange Sud, and farm visitors remember the young Magnier milking the family's dairy herd. The family had bred jumping horses since the 1850s and Grange Stud's stallions had included Cottage, the sire o Vincent O'Brien's triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Cottage Rake.

The O'Brien family from Churchtown and the Magniers went back a long way. John Magnier's mother had been matron of honour at Vincent's wedding in 1951, so it was very appropriate that, in the summer of 1975, John married O'Brien's daughter Susan. The couple now have five children.

Vincent O'Brien, himself a successful breeder long before Coolmore, once said of Magnier: "He is a man of exceptional ability; he thinks big, deals shrewdly, and is most knowledgeable about bloodlines and everything to do with the stud business. John is so able I feel he would have reached the top of whatever profession he chose, and our very close association has been the greatest pleasure to me - it is a joy to work with someone of his calibre."

There is mutual admiration between the pair and Magnier said of O'Brien: "Not only would I describe him as a great trainer - he is on a plane apart when it comes to breeding matters - Vincent can compete with anybody in buying on looks alone. He could, I am certain, pick a potential winner, even a future champion, without even looking at the pedigree. Nobody before Vincent, or likely to come after him, could ever match his knowledge of pedigrees and bloodlines. It's uncanny really."

After taking charge of Grange Stud, the ambitious Magnier bought nearby Castle Hyde Stud to add to his portfolio and by the mid-1970s was building up a thriving operation. Further north, Wing Commander Tim Vigors was developing Coolmore Stud in which Vincent O'Brien, whose Ballydoyle stable was just a few miles away, became a partner in 1973.

Following a divorce, Vigors wished to move out of Ireland and dropped out of the Coolmore partnership. O'Brien recruited Magnier as Coolmore manager as he regarded him as "the most capable young man in Europe for the job." Magnier had met Vernon's football pools heir Robert Sangster through bloodstock agant Jack Doyle at Haydock in 1971 when in Britain to buy Green God to stand at Castle Hyde. Sangster was impressed by the young Irishman and supported Green God.

Both were ambitious and in 1975 the existing partnership of Vigors and O'Brien announced an amalgamation with Sangster and Magnier, to form an operation to be called Coolmore, Castle Hyde and Associated Studs. Gay O'Callaghan, who had run Castle Hyde Stud, helped manage the newly formed operation alongside Magnier, while other early members of the team included eventual general manager Bob Lanigan and former jockey Tommy Stack, as well as Magnier's brothers David, who continues to run the family's Grange Stud, and Peter.

The Coolmore philosophy relied on Sangster's wealth and O'Brien's training skills to buy into the hugely lucrative stallion market by acquiring potential sires either at the sales or producing them in the breeding shed. A number of other investors were involved with the partnership who owned the $13.1 million yearling, bought through British Bloodstock Agency director Joss Collins, being typical of the make-up of those at the time. Sangster and Coolmore he;d a 65 per cent stake, Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos had a quarter and wealthy San Francisco builder Danny Schwartz owned ten per cent.

Other investors in the various syndicates included Alan Clore, son of wealthy financier Sir Charles Clore, Jack Mulcahy, the Irish-born American steel magnate who had advised Vincent O'Brien to take a share in all his own horses, Paris-based Jean-Pierre Binet, Bob Fluor of the American-based Fluor Corporation, Swiss billionaire Walter Haefner, London insurance broker Charles St George, Scottish aristocrat Simon Fraser, Irish property developer Patrick Gallagher and Yorkshire-based David Aykroyd.

Vincent O'Brien would be joined at the sales by a trusted team of advisers, including his brother and right-hand man Phonsie, Coolmore's vet Bob Griffin, bloodstock agent Tom Cooper of the BBA's Irish division and the father of Alan Cooper, racing manager to Stavros Niarchos, and colourful Californian agent Billy McDonald.

The sales team were entrusted with huge sums with which, effectively, to gamble on a mega scale. But Magnier's bold strategy was soon paying dividends. The first crop of sales purchases included the Derby winner The Minstrel, Eclipse winner Artaius and Be My Guest, who had been bought at Goffs for Ir127,000gns and will always be fondly remembered at Coolmore.

Be My Guest started covering for Ir5,000gns in 1978, but his fee rose to Ir75,000gns as he became champion first-season sire and then Britain and Ireland's champion sire in 1982. He died aged 30 in 2004 and is remembered at Coolmore and at Goffs by a life-sized bronze.

There were many other outstanding results on the racecourse or at stud in the early years of Coolmore from such greats as Sadler's Wells, bred by Sangster's Swettenham Stud out of a mare bought as a yearling at Keeneland, El Gran Senor, Be My Guest's son Assert, Alleged, Storm Bird, Golden Fleece, Fairy King and Caerleon. These set down the foundations of a bloodstock empire that has continued to grow and while many of the main players, both human and equine, may no longer be around, John Magnier's Coolmore is still a breeding operation without parallel.

Tips of Orchids

By Hector Rivarola

Wherever possible, specimen plants are always worth retaining intact. It seems a little unfair, when a plant has done its absolute best to grow well to reduce it to a mere seedling that has to start all over again.

Similarly, although vandas and related orchids can become extremely tall, they rarely create difficulties in terms of headroom. It is mainly the sympodial orchids (those that produce new growths from the base of the previous ones) that cause the most problems. These orchids will spread themselves out over the surface area of the pot and beyond. Some of the coelogynes and encyclias can increase their size in an incredibly short number of years.

As most amateur collections consist of a selection of "one-off plants", it is helpful to find out the requirements of each orchid. Even in the smallest greenhouse, plants hung higher and closer to the light are more likely to bloom than those lower down on the benches, where it can be just a little too dark and warm. An orchid that fails to bloom in what you consider to be perfect growing conditions need only be moved to the opposite end of the greenhouse to induce it to flower in its season.

The alternative to keeping your orchids whole, but containing their growth, is to divide them up into smaller pieces. This is regularly done with orchids and is a most successful way of reducing the size of a plant. However, with the smaller-growing species, it is often not until they reach a certain size that their full potential and true beauty can be seen.

Do this wits small bent piece of plastic-coated rather like a hair pin. This become quite easy with those orchids that h an extended rhizome between pseudo bulbs, but take care not to sr the growth by bending it back too In time, the plant will grow into a compact mound of pseudobulbs that there is no more room and create a den display of blooms.

Alternatively, where small plants are growing in baskets suspended in the greenhouse, the now growths can be allowed to encircle pot or basket in which the plant 5 growing. This is where plastic pot. This method will also work well with plants in squaw wooden baskets.

These orchids can be grown on without too much disturbance for many years without taking up any more room than when th first arrived. Where you suspect that the comports (growing medium) has deteriorated. gently pushing down new growths tha are growing proud of the pot surface.

Carefully insert fresh compost, in the fine bark chippings, or a fine bark and peat, in between the pseudo bulbs, and tuck it a at the sides to ensure that there is tome fresh compost for the new roots grow into.

Whether milk, dark, or mixed with fruits, nuts, caramel or other heavenly confection, chocolate is sure to be able to say things that you can't. Think about it. Valentine's Day without chocolate is pretty much Easter without the eggs.

Chocolate in its many forms will surely be a sensation to your date. However, you don't have to follow the tradition of chocolate bars tied in a red ribbon. You can take that extra mile for this one special day with any of these romantic chocolate gift ideas.

Truffles come in elegant heart-shaped boxes for the occasion, so no need to worry about presentation. Take your pick from Swiss, Belgian, American or European --- or just go for the sampler!

Chocolate-dipped Strawberries. Chocolate works best with fresh fruit; and if you want something really tempting, you can't go wrong with strawberries. Truth, Dare or Chocolate Board Game. This simple game can be played with only one line: Truth, or Dare? Dare here means that you would get smothered in melted chocolate. True, it's a little sticky and messy, but there would be no sweeter mess to make or to clean up.

Orchids Pseudobulbs

By John Bernard

The roots of orchids are unique in the plant kingdom. They are thick and mostly white, but are not produced with the same abundance as in other plants.

The chain may divide when two or more growths develop from the last pseudobulb in one year. This is how large clumps can form over several years. It is difficult to make comparisons with other structures and plants. A pseudobulb is unlike a daffodil or an onion bulb, which consists of a layer of sheafs, or false leaf bases, one on top of the other. It is also unlike a potato, which is a starchy, tuberous structure.

Perhaps the closest is the creeping rhizome formed by members of the Iris family. Inside, a pseudobulb consists of a fibrous material that can hold a great deal of water, conserving energy and storing moisture. In the wild, this ensures that the plant can survive periods of drought during the dry season. In cultivation, the dry season is represented by winter, when the plant goes into a semi-dormant state until the longer days of spring activate new growth.

Most orchid roots will remain in the container but, being naturally aerial, will often extend over the rim of the pot and continue to grow, suspended in air, or by attaching themselves to any surface they touch. The roots are not permanent structures but are made annually, sprouting from the base some time after the start of the new growth.

Pseudobulbs have evolved into an unlimited range of shapes and sizes, from long, thin, pencil shapes to rounded or even flattened structures. They may be no larger than a pea, round and shiny, and delicious to look at when newly formed, as in the smaller coelogynes and bulbophyllums. By contrast, they may be the size of a tennis ball, as in the case of some cymbidiums. In cattleyas and allied genera, they become tall and clubshaped, swelling out from a narrow base adjoining the stout rhizome, while the one or two leaves are formed at the top.

Aim lac rhizome and seldom have nett law underground. Many orchids :Ticaosynthesize through the roots, n Mme examples there are a tii small epiphytic species that wine :become totally leafless, relying apon a bundle of thick roots to eritibe necessary chlorophyll. The soots of some orchids are also ammarb.ranractive; in phalaenopsis they ameniram white when outside the pot.

The purpose of this is not fully understood, but it may be that they are a protection from insects or a means of preventing water lying on the foliage, which could be detrimental on cold nights. Other monopodials, including vandas, have leaf tips that are serrated; these enable the plant to dispose of any excess moisture taken up through the roots.

Some orchids, such as Trichotosia ferox, produce plants covered with fine, brown hair, the purpose of which is not fully understood. It is thought that the hairs may provide a layer of protection in cold climates. The stems, new shoots and base of the flower buds of Dendrobium infundibulum are covered with thick, black hairs, creating a rough surface. As the new growth starts to age, the hairs become less apparent.

How to Water

By Charles Hood

Water your orchids using a spouted watering can of a size that reflects the size of your collection. As this grows, you will want to convert to a garden hose in your greenhouse connected to the mains water supply. Use an adjustable nozzle to make the job easier and more enjoyable.

When you apply water, give enough to flood the surface, allowing the water to run through, then repeat the process. This will ensure a good soaking. Because of the nature of orchid compost (growing medium), the water will quickly disappear, so you need to use much more than is actually retained.

Others remain evergreen, losing just a portion of their foliage at about the same time or in the spring when activity restarts. When Orchids Rest Cymbidiums are among those that have a very short resting period. As the new pseudobulb matures at the end of summer, the flower spike emerges from the base. It is not unusual for a new growth to appear alongside it, so the plant continues to grow from one season to the next without a break.

If it has a high pH, wou can soften the water by storing it in a container and adding a muslin bag full of garden peat. Hung over the edge into the water, it will reduce the acidity.

Orchids that grow all sus round can be watered slightly less at winter than in summer, as the plans take longer to dry out. Much depersm however, upon the size of the plats and the amount of compost (growing medium) around it. A small plant ins large pot will need less water because all that is applied will run into the compost.

The phalaenopsis follow a routine of alternately producing one new leaf, then a flower spike, giving the plant a short rest during flowering. Most monopodial orchids behave in a similar way. Most of the coelogynes bloom at the start of their growing season, with the flower spikes appearing from the centre of the new growth while it is very young. There is no definite month when a particular orchid will go to rest or begin to grow again. Watch each plant individually and you will soon get to know from your own observation whether it is growing or not. Once the season's pseudobulb has matured, having reached its full size, the growing cycle is complete. The plant is now at rest, and only when you can see a new growth extending upwards from the base is the new season commencing.

Your water may be fit for human consumption, but epiphytic plants do not like water that contains lime or calcium. Artificial water softeners are available, which work by adding salts and various ingredients to soften the water. Again, these may be fine for domestic use but not very good for our orchids. In fact, the salts added can be more harmful than the original lime.

Water softeners such as reverse osmosis, however, remove impurities to leave a better-quality water suitable for orchids.

The Ins And Outs Of Dating A Sugar Momma

By Joseph Matthews

A sugar momma certainly seems like the best of both worlds. An attractive older woman who takes care of any financial issues that you might have. And these days, finding them has become easier. There are some websites devoted particularly to this practice.

Successfully getting one isn't that easy though. And if you are able to, there are a few things you need to know about how to handle this relationship. Here's a few pointers to get you started.

The first thing you need to realize is that you are being objectified. Cutting through any thoughts you might have of some raging feminist, let's take a look at what that results in: a role reversal of sorts. These women know exactly what they want, and you had better fit the bill. So if you aren't young, decent looking, and in reasonable shape, you'll have a hard time finding success. Think of the dirty old man dating the 18 year old girl. Now imagine you are the 18 year old. In this situation, you are valued for what you bring to the table physically.

So you fit this bill. Lucky you! Now you have to remember to show your value constantly. You are offering these women something of value - youth, energy, and good looks. And you expect the best. They will drag you down very fast if this is in question. Be up front about what you will and will not put up with. She is used to owning things. Make sure she doesn't see you as something she owns.

That brings us around to your end of things - you need to hold up your end of the bargain. It can be difficult. The money might be good, but if she's not particularly attractive, are you willing to look past her flaws? You can't count on finding a really attractive one, or one who has looks that hold up forever. Remember though, they are alone for a reason most of the time.

The reasons can be numerous. One is that she's a nasty person overall. The other is that she's a widow, or has gone through a nasty divorce. So be careful, the egos of these people can be fragile. And you won't be offered the protection that a girl would in this situation. If you are careless, you could see all sorts of ugly retribution. Handle any issues with respect, and a bit of grace, and you should be fine. When it is time to leave her, try to impress upon her that it isn't an issue of physical attraction, even if it is. Overall, leave her better than you found her.

Moving on, let's look at what you need to bring aside from yourself. Aside from a practiced set of manners, impeccable grooming and style, you'll want to play into her romantic ideals. Go beyond the call of duty and offer her a sense of adventure, spontaneity, and romance. You aren't just offering a physical toy, you should attempt to transform her world when you are in it. Simple enough, but it isn't easy. It takes some work and a sense of attentiveness.

Given all this... why would you want to date someone like this? Is it at all rewarding? The answer is a resounding yes! If you are lucky enough to find an attractive one, that is great! She'll also offer you, aside from financial relief, a lover who will, more than likely, be your superior. A woman's libido is heightened as she gets older. Couple that with her experience, and you could be in for a really fun time. Add in the fact that you'll probably be VERY well pampered and be able to experience things you never thought you would be able to afford. And who knows, this might actually grow into a good relationship.

So if you make the cut, and feel like you can handle what is described above, by all means go for it. Just be cautious and respectful, and you might end up having a great experience.

Orchids Outdoor Care in Temperate Gardens

By Elizabeth Ayer

In tropical gardens where the orchids have become permanently attached to trees or other structures, the plants will look after themselves once they have become established. Some form of artificial feeding will be beneficial where this is practical; if not, the plants will grow naturally.

Your collection will grow, as will the individual plants, all of them requiring more room as time goes by. Also, the smaller the greenhouse, the more difficult it becomes to control, and temperatures can fluctuate extremely quickly in a small space, thus threatening the wellbeing of your orchids.

However, during spells of very wet weather and low temperatures, new growths may rot, and you will need to make some provision to protect the orchids from excessive amounts of rain. If you have only a few plants, it may be easier to move them to shelter. Alternatively, a polythene (plastic) "tent" can easily be erected over the plants.

The closer your greenhouse is situated to the house the better. You are likely to visit the greenhouse far more often if it means just stepping outside the back door, rather than having to negotiate a slippery path on a wet winter's night. The greenhouse should not be placed too close to large trees.

Spraying the foliage is no substitute for watering the pots, and the aim should be to keep the orchids evenly moist at the roots to ensure a steady rate of growth.

When catasetums were first introduced, plants with different flowers were thought to be different species. It later became apparent that, within this genus, a plant could produce all-female flowers one year and all-male flowers another, or, very occasionally, to produce both on separate spikes on the same plant at the same time. This also occurs with Cycnoches species, a genus closely related to catasetums.

Another feature of this group is that when the pollinator visits the flower, it triggers a mechanism that releases the pollen and fires it, at great speed, towards the head of the insect. It sticks firmly by means of a viscose patch, but the slightest knock catapults the pollen from the flowers.

There can be two, four or six pollen masses, depending upon the genus. Each pollen mass contains millions of microscopic pollen grains - a feature unique to orchids. The pollinia are hidden beneath a protective cap, the anther, which ensures that they remain fresh. "lhey are joined by a short thread and a sticky patch, which adheres to the thorax or head of the insect.

Make Your Online Date Feel Secure

By Jason King

People started to appreciate the world of online dating because in most cases it works well. For a lot of singles though, the thought of meeting someone online can be a bit scary. They are right though when they think this, as it can be a problem meeting someone in real person.

For women, being careful at an online dating is important. If you're a single man who's genuinely looking for a relationship, this adds an obstacle to your progress. Weirdos and strange men have made it difficult for those men that really want to meet someone.

Patience is important. To help make a woman feel safer when using an online dating service, never ask for any personal information. In the beginning, keep the conversation at a fun and light level. Also, let the relationship move at her speed, and don't push for a real date offline if she doesn't want one. You'll only make yourself look desperate or look as though you're after something other than a relationship.

Don't lie about what you do for a living or what you look like. You can't build a decent relationship if you base it on deceit and lies. Lying about anything can completely ruin the relationship, and ruin your date's chances of ever meeting someone online.

Photos can be an important part of the equation. Post as many photos as possible with you doing day to day stuff. Post photos that show your whole body so they can get a real feel for what you look like.

After you've talked for the first time about meeting for real, you can suggest a meeting in a place that is as public as possible, during the day. You can also tell her to bring a friend with her, so she can feel safe. You have nothing to hide so you don't want to give her any reason to fell insecure.

These simple rules will help you achieve more with your online dating. Dating on the internet can offer you a lot more opportunities if you do it correctly.

Heating System for Orchid Growing

By Jane Kavanagh

Having set up your greenhouse with the correct equipment and prepared it for orchids, use the central staging for the largest plants that need the most headroom. Above these, along the ridge board and elsewhere, suspend orchids, such as vandas and stanhopeas, that like to grow in hanging baskets. These can be attached by the clips that are supplied with aluminium greenhouses, or you can hang them from hooks in timber rafters.

Bear in mind that these plants will have to be taken down for watering to prevent too much surplus water from splashing on to the plants below.

In summer, the same heater can be used as a cooling fan to circulate cool air and reduce the temperature. Other forms of heater, such as paraffin- and gas-burning heaters, which are available for greenhouses, are only suitable for orchids if used with care. They emit ethylene fumes which can cause bud-drop and other problems.

Once the nights begin to get colder, you will need to close the ventilators earlier in the evenings to conserve as much natural warmth as possible until the heater is in operation. On cold, wet evenings, this becomes more urgent to prevent a drop in temperature that would leave the orchids cold all night. Likewise, in the mornings, it may not be possible to open the ventilators until the greenhouse has warmed up sufficiently. "ale aim should be to maintain a steady temperature that -ices and falls according to the time of Lay or night, without causing sudden ranges from one extreme to another.

During the winter months, on sunny days or even dull days when fiere is little wind, it is possible to open the ventilators for short periods to freshen up the air inside the greenhouse and to help to reduce any condensation. Opening the ventilators rust a crack is often sufficient to achieve this, and is an important part of winter care.

When insufficient ventilation is given, the air can become stagnant, encouraging the growth of moulds and rots. This can be prevented by opening one ventilator for a short period during the middle of the day. Some greenhouses are equipped with a ventilator on both sides of the roof. This creates more opportunities for opening the ventilators, and on windy days you can open the ventilator on the leeward side to the wind. Bottom ventilators, sited on both sides of the greenhouse, just above ground level, are ideal for creating a natural current of air from the bottom to the top. This current of air creates a natural cooling breeze through the orchids.

You will need to visit your greenhouse two or three times a day, if possible, to check that the temperature and humidity are right. A visit first thing in the morning is a joy. This is the time when those fragrant orchids in bloom give off the strongest perfume; the scent of their flowers in the moist morning air is one of the delights of orchid growing.

By double checking the thermostat with the thermometer, you will be able to provide a more accurately controlled temperature. Checking the Temperature Heating in winter is the most essential part of orchid growing. While the plants can survive being dry for short periods, they will suffer if they get too cold. One bitterly cold night without heat can seriously harm the orchids. Monitor the heating continually, by making it part of a daily inspection. Check that the daily temperature is correct by consulting a maximum/ minimum thermometer, and keep a record so that you build up a pattern showing the average and also noting any severe drops. You can then adjust the thermostat accordingly.

Same Day Flower Delivery and Low Prices

By Diana Otis

The biggest complaint of consumers about online florists has been focused on the poor quality of many of the flower orders when they are finally delivered. Customers have argued that their order arrived bearing no recognizable resemblance to the vibrant display model featured in the clear color photos advertised online. Not only are purchasers upset, the recipients are disappointed as well, and sometimes they are bitterly unhappy. When the companies and owners fail to remedy the situation and address the customer's frustration it then creates a further alienation and the customer will not return.

When someone chooses an item from a discount flower delivery site, his or her satisfaction is guaranteed. Only flowers with dewy freshness are used in these floral arrangements and customers are quick to note the difference. These quality cut flowers can maintain their color and radiance over extremely long periods of time with minimal care. There is also the satisfaction and peace of mind in knowing that these flowers are capable of eloquently expressing your feelings to anyone.

All florists are not alike, and today there are many discount flower delivery sites that are competing head to head with heavyweight florists, and the discounters are coming out on top. This success is due to their solid and honest marketing approach that is being used. The smaller companies are focusing on their strengths to attract customers and expand their business. When you choose one of these companies you will always be sending impressive gifts of outstanding beauty and value.

The discount flower delivery sites steer away from the more exotic and expensive blooms. Instead, they find that they can still create dazzling and beautiful creations by skillfully accenting an arrangement with colorful native flowers or colorful, exuberant dahlias, mums and sunflowers. All of these flower varieties produce effusive and colorful blooms but are very cheap to buy. For budget minded businesses and customers, it is a win- win situation.

The biggest concern of consumers about online florists has often on the less than perfect quality of many of the flower orders when they are finally delivered. Customers have argued that their order arrived bearing no resemblance to the vibrant displays featured in the color photos advertised online. This can occur if the flowers being used are not fresh and colorful.

When someone chooses an item from a discount flower delivery site the arrangements are guaranteed to contain only dewy fresh flowers that have beautiful colors. These quality cut flowers will maintain radiant color and appearance over extremely long periods of time with only minimal care. When you arrange delivery of flowers of this quality you know that the recipients will be able to understand the message that you are sending to them.

A major difference that separates the larger, established companies from the younger "upstarts" is evidenced by their approach to the flower business. The exotic and beautiful blooms featured in colorful advertisements are breathtaking, but there are many untold reasons why this look often falls short in real life. These advertising glossies are the work of a professional photographer who used the ideal setting, lighting, and temperature to achieve this look of floral perfection.

Growing Orchids In Your Home

By Helen Suddell

Growing areas can accommodate from just one to many orchids. However, an orchid plant placed in isolation, with nothing around it to stimulate growth, will not succeed. A barren windowsill can be likened to a desert, until a few adaptations are made to make the area habitable. A narrow windowsill may have to be widened by attaching a wooden shelf to give more space and increase the growing area. This area can be used for humidity trays.

An area for orchids can be created in the same way that space is provided to grow them indoors, except that here there is more room, and particularly more headroom, which means that larger orchids such as cymbidiums can be grown.

If the construction has glass to the ground, the orchids can be grown at floor level, and may need some shade from blinds pulled down at the side, with the roof area painted with shading material. This would only be necessary to prevent the sun shining directly upon the leaves.

Orchids placed on the floor would need to stand on concrete or tiles, which can be wetted without harming any installations, and some means of channelling away surplus water would need to be set up.

Bathroom-grown orchids are often distinguishable by the light coating of talcum powder covering their leaves. This, in itself, is dangerous to orchids, clogging up the leaf pores and preventing them from ventilating in the normal way. In a house, an ideal position can often be found in a window halfway up the stairwell.

Where a single plant is being used as a specimen to enhance one small window, for example, it is even more important that there is some moisture surrounding it, and a small humidity tray or saucer becomes necessary. Add other plants to the tray for effect, or arrange large pebbles or sea shells to create a pleasing attraction with the orchid as centrepiece.

An alternative idea to growing on the windowsill is the growing cart on wheels. Growing carts are available from most garden centres and are designed for indoor plants. They have the advantage in that the plants can be wheeled to a light position close to the window during the day and moved back at night. It also makes the chore of taking plants out for watering much easier.

Some orchid plants can become top heavy, particularly when they have outgrown their pots and are in need of repotting, and these are best handled singly rather than risk their falling over while being moved in the cart. A freestanding coffee-type table situated in front of a window can be used in the same way, without the need for installing a wider shelf.

Bad Habits are Hard to Break

By Charlie Reese

Breaking Bad Habits is Hard but Possible

Regardless of who you are there, you likely have a bad habit that you wish you could break. It may be something as simple as biting your nails, or it could involve an addiction to nicotine or alcohol. It can be tough to find the willpower to be successful at breaking bad habits, but it can be done if you have the desire. The first step in overcoming the problem is recognizing it.

There are many things you can do to stop a negative behavior. In the case of someone who bites their nail, breaking that habit might involve putting something spicy on their fingernails. Another thing that often works to help deter the individual from biting their nails is a couple of layers of fingernail polish. This approach obviously works much better for women than men.

Sometimes the key to stopping a particular activity is replacing it with something new. If you are accustomed to smoking at a certain time everyday, maybe during your coffee or lunch break at work, talk a walk outside instead. Not only will this help with breaking bad habits, but it may result in the extra benefit of you getting in better shape. If you arent feeling energetic you can always use the time to read a book, or make a list of things you need to do. Anything that can take your mind away from the habit you are hoping to break is a step in the right direction.

Things like Internet addiction are overtaking the lives of many people. This can be an incredibly hard habit to break but with a clear but plan of action it can be done. If you really are determined to break your habit of going online at every chance you get, consider canceling your Internet service. If you do this youll have to pay to use the Internet at a caf or library. This is a great deterrent as it cost a lot to log on this way.

Involving others in your quest to better your life can be incredibly helpful. This works really well if the other person is interested in breaking bad habits too. If you both want to give up the same vice, you can work together and encourage one another. Approach it as though you are each others coach. Agree to give pep talks and have rewards for all the milestones the two of you hit. This can provide all the incentive you need to really succeed and the best part of it is that youll have someone there who understands exactly what you are feeling.

They say that old habits are often hard to break. Thats true, but its important to remember that they arent impossible to break. With some perseverance and drive youll be breaking bad habits and not only will you be happier but youll be proud of yourself too.

Jerusalem Artichoke

By Jack Nelson

Synonym are Cichorium endivia var. crispa L., Cichorium endivia L.

Common names are Endive, Escarolle (Eng.); Chicore Frisde (Fr.); Escarola (Sp.); Krause Winter Endivie (Ger.); Krulandijvie (Neth.).

Cultivars are in India.

The Middle East, later spreading to Egypt by 4500 BC, Greece and many parts of the Mediterranean before being introduced to China by the seventh century AD. A recent introduction to the tropics. Possibly derived from L. serriola L. which is indigenous to western Asia.

Areas of cultivation includes India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, the Caribbean, Central and South America, East, West and Central Africa and in most tropical countries.

An annual glabrous herb. Roots: main taproot, with fibrous lateral branches. Stems: cylindrical, containing latex vessels, up to 10 cm in most cultivars but extended to 1 m in L. sativa var. asparagina. Leaves: almost sessile, arranged spirally in rosettes, variable in size and form, 10-25 cm in length. Flowers: pentamerous, yellow, in dense clusters, ligulate and hermaphrodite. anthers connate; stigma bifid. Seeds: achenes, oval, 34 mm in length, ribbed, hairy at one end, white, yellow, grey or brown, pappus of silky hairs; approximately 100 seeds/g.

Relatively tolerant to a wide range of climatic and soil conditions although well-drained sandy loams, with a pH of 6.0-6.8 are generally considered preferable. Cultivars which are specifically adapted to tropical environments have been hybridised or selected for many ecological regions. Many are tolerant to high day temperatures of up to 30C and short days, although the most suitable range for most cultivars is 15-20C. High temperatures often result in premature flowering, stunted leaf growth and bitter tasting leaves. At low elevations in high temperature areas, some cultivars do not form solid heads; they tend to flower precociously and seed without forming the normal number of rosette leaves. Cultivars have been selected which do not readily form flowering stems at high temperatures. Elevations above 1000 m provide good conditions for optimum growth. Seeds require a period of dry storage before sowing and some cultivars which have been stored at high temperatures have a requirement for exposure to light before dormancy is broken. The optimum germination temperature is 25C; above this temperature, germination percentage falls rapidly due to an inhibition of gaseous diffusion and a consequent shortage of oxygen. Gibberellic acid (GA3) has been found to overcome dormancy induced by high temperatures. Viability is rapidly lost in moist atmospheres at high temperatures. Daylength variation does not appear to affect development to any significant extent.

Seeds are sown in seed beds or containers and transplanted when 5-7 cm in height to rows 30-36 cm apart, 20-25 cm between plants, depending on the vigor of the cultivar. Approximately 0.5 kg of seed is required to plant one hectare. Blanching, which reduces the bitter flavor of the leaves, is induced by tying the leaves together when the plants are approaching maturity, for a period of 1044 days. During wet weather, the internal leaves are liable to rot and decay and this practice is only feasible during relatively dry periods. Irrigation: The requirement for water is moderately high, plants grown during the dry season will require supplementary irrigation. Nutrient requirements: Plants respond well to high levels of organic material in the soil but additional nitrogenous dressings are generally beneficial during the early period of growth.

Tubers normally mature within 80-150 days from planting; maturity period varies with cultivar. Removal of the flowering heads in the bud stage will encourage tuber development; the stems are normally cut and removed before the tubers are lifted. Yield: Indian yields in the range of 12-25 t/ha are normal, but yields of 30-40 t/ha have been recorded. Seed production: Seeds are readily formed but are rarely required since tubers are mainly used in propagation.

The leaves should be fresh and crisp, free of diseases or pests and either green or cream, if blanched. The central leaves should be healthy, with no discoloration. The heads are normally washed immediately after harvest. Wilting can be reduced by spraying with water but complete enclosure within plastic wrappers or bags should be avoided, the top should be left open. At 0C the storage life is about 20 days.

he young leaves, preferably blanched, are eaten in salads. The mature green leaves are sometimes used as a cooked vegetable.

Sowing Orchid Seeds

By Thomas Sandford

When the cross-pollination of two orchids occurs, and the genes of the pollinating parent are mixed with those of the pod plant, a new set of genes is created. The result is unique individuals that have not previously occurred and are ttffilidyto occur changes will take place each time crossfertilization occurs, thus making each seedling, or clone, from one capsule a "one off' with its own set of genes.

Most species clones are diploid. indicated by the scientific symbol 2N. Diploids have an even number of chromosomes and ensure fertility throughout the species.

There are well-documented accounts of orchids in cultivation that are over 150 years old. These plants are exactly the same as they were when they first flowered. Their colour, shape and size do not alter with age, and all vegetative propagations will remain the same. It is possible to divide or take cuttings many times with the results all being identical to the original stock. However, propagating orchids from seed enables the grower to produce new orchids that have not been seen before.

If you are not ready to sow your seed immediately, you can store it in a refrigerator; but since orchid seed is so fine it does not store easily, and the longer you keep it, the less fertile it becomes.

However, there is a conservation movement now experimenting with long-term deep-freezing, whereby the seed is dried and kept at extremely low temperatures.

In the commercial world, mericloning, a a scientific method of mass-producing one clone to produce identical plants, is now used more than seed raising. This breakthrough was developed by Professor Georges Morel at the llniversity of Paris, who became the first person to produce orchids by meristemming, or cloning, in the early 1960s. He adapted a method devised 15 years earlier in California to rid plants of virus disease, and discovered a new market in orchids.

These are wed into micro-thin slivers and placed on a microscope slide, where a suitable state of division can be found and the chromosomes counted.

Orchids with uneven numbers of Chromosomes will not breed. These can often be converted by treating at a very eirly stage with Colchicine, an extract iom the crocus. This will react by dunging the chromosome count in both seed- and tissue-cultured plants. This technique requires some laborawry experience in handling such very szriall amounts of plant material.

Orchid Hybrids

By Gina Clifford

The outbreak of the First World War interrupted the blossoming new science of hybridization because changes to the social order greatly affected the advancement of orchid cultivation. Many of the estates that had been holders of the large private collections had to be run down because their labour force was called to enlist, many never to return.

The birthplace of orchid hybrids was the nursery of James Veitch and Sons in Exeter, Devon.

Cattleyas and phalaenopsis were found to do well in this climate and could be grown with no expensive heating bills. The same was true in New Zealand and parts of Australia, whose climate favoured cymbidiums, enabling them to be grown without artificial heating.

Every third year, the World Orchid Conference Committee stages an event that alternates its venue between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This sustained interest in orchids has resulted in the publication of many volumes written for the beginner and specialized grower.

Progress was slow until the botanists realized that orchids grew in conjunction with a microscopic fungus, without which the seed would not germinate. Following this discovery, in around 1903, the Frenchman Noel Bernard isolated the fungus and placed it in sterile flasks on an agar base on which the seed was sown.

The first results were amazing, and orchid seeds were germinated en masse. Where previously perhaps one per cent of seed sown would survive, now there was almost a 100 per cent success rate.

Amateur societies dedicated to the advance of orchid cultivation started up, and in the United States the American Orchid Society was founded in 1921. This organization grew from small beginnings to a worldwide network, becoming the largest orchid society in the world.

Twenty years after the First World War, the orchid industry was again flourishing when the Second World War began, dashing all hopes of further progress. There was difficulty in obtaining fuel for amateur greenhouses, while commercial nurseries had to be used for the production of food crops. The lack of skilled growers saw the demise of the last remaining large collections.

Species in cultivation are kept in botanical gardens and specialist collections, which can care for them for posterity.

There is no other plant family that will hybridize to the same extent as the orchid. They are highly evolved plants and many are still evolving. This, combined with their dependency upon insects for pollination, has influenced their ability to be hybridized, with f ew constrictions. In the wild, natural hybrids are a fairly common occurrence, and this is proved when a man-made cross produces flowers identical to the species. Laelia gouldiana, for example, is considered to be a natural hybrid between L. anceps and L. autumnalis.

In cultivation, hybridization has continued apace since the middle of the 19th century, when the unique structure of the orchid flower was understood. Many early experiments failed because the growers around at that time had little knowledge of compatibility or the relationships orchids had with each other. It was soon realized, however, that most species would breed readily with others of their own genus to produce interspecific crosses.

It was also found that intergeneric crosses could be made between genera that were sufficiently related. It is this readiness to jump species and produce intergeneric hybrids that sets orchids apart. There are some, such as the cymbidiums, that will only produce interspecific hybrids, and attempts to cross them with other, related orchids have largely failed. However,

Cymbidiurn species from vastly different parts of the world, thousands of miles apart, will cross:breed, pointing to a close relationship between them that has endured despite a long separation from a common ancestor. Cymbidium devonianum, which originates from the Himalayas can be crossed with C. madidum from northern Australia; the resulting hybrid produces blooms that are midway between the species. Among the slipper orchids, the paphiopedilums and phragmipediums appear similar. Hybridizing among the former has produced some fantastic results. However, there are no crosses with the South American phragmipediums.

At the centre are a number of ridges that guide the insect to the bloom. These are usually bright yellow and are called the honey guides. Above the lip is the column - a single, finger-like structure containing the reproductive parts of the flower. The pollen is found at the end dorsal sepal of the column, usually in two, four or six masses. These pollen masses contain the pollen grains, or pollinia, which, unlike other flowers, are not in a powder form. "l'hey are held at the end of the column under a protective cap called the anther.

The pollen masses are golden yellow and attached to a viscid disc by two thin threads. As an insect emerges from a flower, the sticky pad attached to the pollinia adheres to its head or thorax. The anther falls away as the insect flies off, carrying the pollinia to the next bloom.

On the underside of the column is a sticky patch. This is the stigmatic surface into which the pollinia are deposited. The pollen grains extend their growing tubes down through the centre of the column to reach the ovaries situated directly behind the flower, where they meet the thousands of unfertilized seeds. By the time fertilization is complete, the ovaries will have swollen into a large capsule containing up to a million minute, golden yellow, ripening seeds.

Be aware of those places that could be harmful to orchids. Do not stand the plants directly in front of, or above, an open fire, where they will quickly succumb to overheating and dehydration. Remember that appliances such as the fridge in the kitchen and the television in the living room both give out warmth when working, which is harmful to orchids placed nearby. Also, avoid any area where the plants will be in a draught (draft) from an open doorway or other source of cold air. Finally, wherever you place your orchids, take care to prevent them being knocked over or damaged by pets or children.

Odontoglossums Orchids

By Susan Richardson

Orchids can be propagated vegetatively like many other plants, whether from back bulbs, stem cuttings and keikis or adventitious growths. In many cases, the method of propagation depends on whether the orchid is sympodial or monopodial. The monopodial orchids, such as vandas, are those that grow from an upright, extending rhizome, with new leaves coming from the centre. These orchids propagate themselves, or can be propagated from, in a different way to sympodial orchids.

Phalaenopsis occasionally produce keikis or adventitious growths from the old flowering stems. This is frequently seen with the species Phalaenopsis lueddemanniana and related species or hybrids. If you want to encourage new growth in this way, you can treat the flowering stems with keiki paste - a growth hormone enhancement that is available from some specialist nurseries or orchid sundry firms. First remove the small green bract that protects each node along the stem, then apply the paste.

Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums Sympodial orchids that do not produce pseudobulbs, mainly the paphiopedilums and phragmipediums, can be propagated from a back portion of growth, which is removed at repotting time in the same way as the old pseudobulbs are removed. This should only be attempted when a plant is large enough and is carrying in excess of four strong growths, otherwise it will reduce the strength of the main plant. Most of the phragmipediums are robust growers that are more easily propagated than many of the hybrid paphiopedilums, which can be slow growing, with the older growths dying before there is an opportunity to build up a very large plant.

Generally, a plant that is growing well has no need to produce further growths .hen the main stem is damaged the plant prevented from growing in its centre, perhaps because of rot or mermanical damage, will a new growth !re alai-rated near the base. This ability to propagate can be encouraged in large plants, when meassary, but it is not without some risk, arid should only be attempted if it is in the plant's interest to do so.

When a plant has too many leafless back bulbs, these can be severed at repotting time. Divided singly, these can be potted up on their own in a small pot and placed in a propagator or warm, light spot, where the dormant eye will start into growth within a few weeks.

Where there is a lack of aerial roots on the top portion of the plant, encourage them to grow by wrapping the stem in sphagnum moss or similar moisture-holding material, covering it with polythene (plastic) and tying it into position. Keeping the moss wet will encourage roots to form.

When a back bulb does not grow, it may be too old, and any spare eyes are dead. An old back bulb that gets started into growth sometimes shrivels and dies before the new growth has got very far, and unless it has made its own roots, it is unlikely to survive.

Alternatively, you can take stem cuttings from orchids such as dendrobiums and thunias by laying stem lengths on their sides in a seed tray. A new plant will emerge from the node in a few months. Again, this is a longterm procedure and is only worth doing if you want a number of young plants identical to the main plant.

How To Keep A Woman Engaged After You Approach Her

By Joseph Matthews

I've seen this happen a bunch of times - a guy approaches a girl, says something, usually a few words, and then is left with nothing to really say. The conversation is dead on the vine, before it could even start.

After a certain point, the guy didn't attract her attention and pretty much runs out of things to say. After that, the girl brushes him off and he's left scratching his head.

Whether you're meeting women at parties, coffee shops, bookstores, bars, or nightclubs, without keeping the ball rolling after approaching them, your chances of success are grim.

If you can't follow up and continue the conversation after you've approached the girl, you're destined for one failure after another. And as you can imagine, that will get pretty frustrating pretty fast!

Some guys know how to start up conversations with girls - it's easy enough to do if you have a good pick up line that actually works. But taking it BEYOND that initial conversation is always the part guys run into trouble with.

This part is riddled with boring questions, awkward silences, and desperate attempts to salvage a sinking ship. For the life of them, most guys just don't know what to talk about with women!

I wasn't born with any real gift when it comes to smooth talk. Like a lot of men before me, I'd do a lot of work in trying to get a woman to like me. I'd constantly monitor every word that came out of my, internally edit things before saying them, and the end results weren't better than before. I just ended up more self conscious and had even less to say!

And I'd suffer the same fate as many of these men - the girl would politely excuse herself from the interaction, and I'd never see her again.

But then, I made a breakthrough discovery...

Have you ever noticed that when you're talking to a girl you're NOT attracted to, how easy it is to carry on a conversation? You can just focus on having a good time, shoot the breeze, and talk about anything, no matter how silly or stupid it may seem?

The key here is not about trying to keep the girl engaged, it's about trying to make YOURSELF feel comfortable!

Once you can be relaxed and loosen up, you naturally become a more engaging guy!

But being comfortable with a girl isn't enough. You also have to be able to build sexual tension while talking to her, otherwise, there's nothing to keep her interested in you.

So the best way to quickly engage a woman, and keep her engaged, is to talk to her the same way you'd talk to a girl you already know, feel comfortable with, and think is attracted to you.

That last part is key! Believing the girl is already attracted to you (even if she isn't) helps put you in the right mindset to create the sexual tension you need to build up attraction.

You've got to figure out the subjects you talk about with women you know. Then use these same conversation topics with women you've just met.

Then act like you have known the woman for years, and work with the presupposition that she's deeply in to you. Try it and you will have a far easier time in keeping a woman engaged.

The Orchid King

By Mary Bailey

In Europe, an interest in orchids can be traced back to Greek and Roman times. At that time, people knew only of the terrestrial orchids, which were vastly different from the tropical epiphytes.

When word reached him of a legendary red Phalaenopsis, he immediately dispatched a collector called Robbelin to find it. In 1881, Robbelin arrived at the small island of Davao in the Philippines, after searching the nearby island of Mindenoa without success.

The word orchid is, in fact, derived from the Greek "orchis", meaning testes, which refers to the tubers found in pairs ill some species.

In the New World, orchids were used by the inhabitants long before the arrival of Europeans.

Twenty years after Columbus landed on the mainland of South America in 1498, Hernando Cones arrived in Mexico to overthrow the Aztec Empire and to claim Mexico for Spain. He found a species of Vanilla being cultivated for its perfume and, more importantly, for its culinary use.

A few orchid nurseries that had beginnings in the 19th century are still flourishing today. These include Beans Orchids of Cooksbridge, Sussex, which was started in 1879 by a Scotsman, Alexander McBean. Mansell and Hatcher's nursery in Leeds, Yorkshire, commenced in the 1890s, and in France, Vacherot and Lecoufle have been in existence since 1886, making theirs the oldest family-run nursery in the world.

In the 19th century, the orchid scene in Britain centred around four k-ey people: the hunter, the botanist, the nurseryman, and the purchaser. Initially, it depended upon the orchid hunters who collected for the private growers and the nurserymen. The nurserymen established the trade and acquired the knowledge needed to cultivate a wide range of orchids from different regions of the world. Most of the professional orchid growers started their apprenticeships at the nurseries and later found employment in the large collections.

At the end of the 18th century, merchant ships returned from the New World laden with newly discovered animals and plants, including orchids. The comet orchid (Angraecum sesquipedale) from Madagascar has an incredibly long spur at the back of the flower. This enables it to be pollinated by the night flying hawk moth, which has a tongue of exactly the same length.

A Brief History of Airplanes

By Sheikh Kassim

Men have always desired to fly since time immemorial. Airplane history is a phrase that will explain the notion of creating a machine that is able to lift off from the surface of the earth and climb to the sky with people on board. This is not a new idea but has been around for the past two centuries. Before this time however, human beings tried to fly with flaps in imitation of birds. People came up with designs to flying contraptions with flaps known as ornithopters. On paper, it seemed sensible. However, it was more difficult to implement because it is not simple to catapult a pilot with their contraption as easily as a bird can take off into the air.

When it comes to current airplane history, no achievement has gone further down in record as the progress that was initiated by Orville and Wilbur Wright popularly known as the Wright brothers. The brothers having great faith got official government documentation to enlist their invention as intellectual property not more than nine months prior to the hailed initial winning flight test run. This was the twelfth month of nineteen hundred and three. Orville and Wilbur were keen to record each event in their quest for an airplane and this wisdom froze time on paper when they took a picture of Orville flying their invention thereby making airplane history.

There exist assortments defining the types of airplanes that are made in these recent times. However, they are dividable into three broad sorts that will include commercial carriers, military airplanes and sea airplanes. Commercial jets are huge airliners manufactured to convey passengers or goods. These can as well be sorted into two, three or four engine jet airplanes, with the latter being the biggest of the three with a load capacity of a thousand commuters on transit.

The second of the types of airplanes are the military planes which of course are planes that are used especially by the armed forces personnel. These planes are mostly employed when setting an offensive against enemy fire either from the ground or from the skies. Others will be used to transport marines as well as gear to the base or battle frontiers.

The final among the types of planes is the category known as sea planes which primarily land and take off on the water. They will have floats fixed doing away with conventional wheels, these are known as float planes. Then there are the fly boats with special features such as the shape that make it emulate the mechanism of a boat. Lastly are the amphibians which as the name suggests go on both land as well as sea.

Mastering Portrait Photography - Kill Those Wrinkles!

By Dan Eitreim

Weekend shooters and pros alike all have one major task when doing portrait photography, make your subject look like a million bucks. And do it without using a lot of obvious retouches. Easy to say, hard to do.

Spending countless hours in Photoshop, a master at retouching might be able to give you a beautiful portrait (or they might overdo it and ruin your work) but your life as a photographer will be much easier if you learn to do a few simple fixes "in camera".

One big area that can dramatically improve your photos, with very little effort is knowing how to handle acne and wrinkles.

Adults are concerned with wrinkles and teens worry about acne and other facial blemishes. It's a fact of life. Your models won't say anything about it, but they expect you to know how to lessen their appearance.

Let's face it, as we get older our wrinkles become more pronounced and actually deeper. Wrinkles are the first photographic signs of our age but they're a problem that is actually fairly easy to fix.

What defines a wrinkle? It's the shadows filling in the crevices. As we get older and those crevices get deeper, the shadows become darker and darker. How to get rid of wrinkles and take years off your photographic model?

Lessen the shadows.

If you have light that is glancing across the face from above or to the side of the subject, the deepest part of the wrinkle crevices are not getting any light and appear darker. This makes our model look older. Depending on the directionality and intensity of the light, this can add a lot of "visual" years to our subject.

To make your model look younger, have your light shining directly into their face. This way the light is able to get into the "bottom" of the wrinkle. The wrinkles are filled with light which lessens their shadow effect and the years drop off dramatically. The time spent in Photoshop does too!

Teens with acne? Same thing. Acne, acne scars and other facial blemishes are at least partially defined by shadow. So, we handle it the same way we dealt with wrinkles, avoid hard, skimming side or top light. Use light directly aimed into the face and pimples and other scars will be visually minimized.

By using your on camera flash in addition to the sun or any other lighting you are using. A reflector could also be used to help fill in the shadows. Remember this tip, use it, and your young looking adults and smooth faced teens will love you.

You now know as much as most professionals! Now it's time to make some money with YOUR camera! to see how easy this is, follow one of the links to my site...

Great Books on Relationships

By Charlie Reese

Books On Relationships

Even for the most functional, sane individuals, dealing with relationships can be tough at times. People suffer from jealousy, intimacy problems, trust issues, communication breakdowns, and all sorts of other obstacles to building a healthy relationship.

It is no surprise that the relationship problem advice industry is a multi-billion-dollar business. There are books on relationships from every perspective meant for every audience, from young kids who are just starting to date to old people trying to reignite the spark in a love that has lasted a lifetime.

I have been writing books on relationships for many years, although I've only recently met with success. I first started writing books on emotional intimacy back in the 70s when it was just starting to become a trendy thing to do.

I actually started doing it for my own therapeutic purposes. I'm the sort of person who has to write out his thoughts to deal with them. When I don't write, I don't move on. Through giving advice to an audience, I was able to give good advice myself. It was amazing how much more I knew that I thought I did, and I realized at once that I have a future as a relationship advice guru.

Since then, the dating scene has changed a lot. Nowadays, online dating, professional matchmaking services, speed dating, and all sorts of other services that weren't available when I started writing are taken for granted.

I view these developments as positive in many ways. So many books on relationships deal with how to meet people if you're shy or awkward, but nowadays it is much easier than it used to be. Shy and awkward people of both genders are able to network online and meet from a comfortable social distance before they commit to getting together face-to-face. This can make initial meetings much less awkward, since both people already know what to expect.

Most of my new books on relationships deal with the issues I am going through right now. As I grow older, I want to deepen my relationship. A lot of books on relationships are written with a subtext that, as one grows old, love tends to die down. In my experience, however, this doesn't have to be true at all. On the contrary, the big task of growing older is making your love even deeper and more profound then it was when you were young.

I'm not working on a book on relationship problems, but more of a celebration of love affairs that last a lifetime. It is beautiful to be old and so completely in love with the person you chose to spend your life with all those years ago. Even people in healthy relationships can benefit from sitting back and reflecting on how far they've come.

Repotting and Dividing Orchids

By Louis Winston

To drop on a plant, remove its pot by up-turning and tapping the pot on the edge of the bench. It should slide out easily, and you should see a ball of white roots holding the compost in place. Select a new pot that is about 5cm (2in) larger to give sufficient room for another one to two years' growth.

If it is a young, immature plant that will need dropping on again in a few months' time, you need only use a pot about 2.5cm (l in) larger. Place a layer of the crocking material at the base of the pot, and a small amount of compost (growing medium) on top.

Select a piece of cork bark, or similar wood, of a size to accommodate the plant, allowing room for growth. Insert a length of wire to make a hook in the top of the bark. You will also require a length of thin, plastic-coated wire and a pair of small pliers. Place a wad of the supporting moss and fibre around the base of the plant, without covering the pseudobulbs, and place another wad directly on the hark. On top of this, place your plant with the new growths at the top, facing towards the bark. If the plant has a downward-growing habit, such as Brassavola nodosa, reverse it.

Once the plant is in position, hold it firmly and place a band of thin, plastic-coated wire around the base to secure it in position. 'rake care to pass the wire around the medium and rhizome, without cutting into a pseudobulb. Pull the wire tight and twist it using the pliers, then cut off the ends. Place another tie farther up, if necessary. When finished, the plant must be secure on its bark. If it is loose, it will not root into the bark or progress well. Finally, trim the base material with a pair of scissors to give a neat, professional finish to your work. Spray the plant daily and give it an occasional soak in water to make sure that the base remains damp. !Pam growing in this way will need mailar spraying and watering to them moist than ones in pots.

If you wish to add to your stock of plants by propagating, these back bulbs can he potted up on their own. They will often produce a new growth, which can be grown on to flower within a few years. Where before you had one untidylooking plant, you will now have two or more smaller, neater plants. Repot these in pots of a similar size to the one the old orchid came from; this should leave sufficient room in each pot for the plant on for another two years.

If you are using Rockwool, pour this into the cavity in the same way, but do not firm down as you would with bark or peat. Keep the Rockwool loose and open, making sure that the plant remains steady and firm.

Repotting and dividing involves completely repotting orchid, stripping out the old compost growing medium), discarding any dead and removing surplus leafless or pseudobulbs. It can be used for nng up large plants, so that they can often be returned to the same size of pot. You can separate the plant into two or more divisions, provided each has at least re new growth.

Wire the plant firmly, but not too tightly, so that it will be held secure without damaging the rhizome. at different times throughout the year. You can decorate the orchid tree further by attaching a few of the smaller-growing tillandsias or ferns. Orchids growing in this way need the humidity that can only be achieved in a greenhouse. They would not grow well indoors, where it would be extremely difficult to keep the plants sufficiently wet.

Reasons You Should Buy A Quality Towbar, Not A Cheap One

By Damian Papworth

Typically when we go camping, we go pretty spartan. A tent, a few sleeping bags and half a car of camping gear is all we really need. Late last year though, we decided to go a bit more "classy" and hired a caravan instead. It was a pleasant change. In order to pull the caravan though, I needed a new towbar installed on the jeep.

So I made my way down to All Vehicle Accessories (AVA) in Thomastown to get a cheap towbar installed. The cheaper it was the better it was as far as I was concerned. After all, we were about to go on holiday and I wanted to use my spending money there. Luckily for me, the guys at AVA were professional enough to talk me out of using price as a means of discriminating when choosing a towbar.

The first thing they asked me was what I wanted to tow. I told them about the camping trip and the rented caravan. Also, we enjoy riding, my wife in particular loves competing in triathlons. So I'd probably come back later and get car bike racks (which I now know are called bike beaks) for the towbar.

Having compiled my list, we discussed the cost of the items we were going to tow. Our bikes (two of them) are worth about $6,000 all up. Mine isn't all that valuable, but my wife, boy she spent a mint on hers. Such is her love for the triathlon.

I had no idea how much caravans cost to buy so I had to look it up. Boy they are expensive. The cheapest I could find was $5000 and I have to say, it was pretty ordinary. I found many nice ones well in excess of $100,000. That's a crazy lot of money to trust to a cheap towbar.

I was convinced. I had to change my attitude toward this towbar. If I was going to pay the money regardless, I may as well have it done properly. Instead of finding a cheap towbar, I realised I needed to find a quality towbar. Paying the few extra dollars didn't matter anymore, when taken in perspective with the items being towed.

Having a better idea of what I was looking for made the product choice a little bit easier. For example, did you know that Hayman Reece are the only towbar that comes with a lifetime warranty anywhere in Australia. Personally I think this speaks volumes for the quality of their products. They are clearly the only brand which fully trusts their own product. The great thing about Hayman Reece towbars too ,are the accessories you can get with them. They have accessories which make their towbars safer and work better with your vehicle.

To start with, they have a Weight Distribution Hitch which will take the extra money you spent on the towbar and hitch, and put it right back into your pocket with fuel savings. That's right, it makes the trailer work better with your vehicle. It does this by reducing the ball weight on the towbar and therefore drag. Less drag means your vehicle drives easier, giving it better efficiency and a lower consumption of fuel. Sometimes you just need to spend a bit to save.

The other thing they sell is an accessory called Sway Control. This one I definitely wanted as it makes towing so much safer. Given that my family are going to be in the vehicle with me as we drive on our holiday, safety really is my first priority. Sway control is simply the add on that stops the caravan from swerving all over the road, every time a truck drives past the other way. A very nifty accessory which makes for a much safer trip.

Its good when you go to an auto store and the professionals there actually give you advice, help you get past your preconceived ideas and make a better decision. I'm certainly glad the guys at AVA helped me see sense when it came to my towbar.

Replacing Compost for Orchids

By David Mores

Orchids will grow in almost any type of container, but for practical purposes they are usually cultivated in plastic pots, which are light and easy to use. They also stay dean in a humid environment and can be washed and reused. Terracotta pots are also suitable - and were once considered preferable to plastic pots because they kept the roots cooler in high temperatures - but they are costly and the larger sizes can be considerably heavy. Also, being porous, they dry out much more quickly, and it is easier to maintain a constantly moist compost (growing medium) with plastic pots.

Orchids need to be grown in as small a pot as possible. They can easily be overpotted, and, where there is a great mass of compost (growing medium) around the roots, there is a danger that they will not be able to extract the water around them fast enough, which means that they will rot. Overpotting leads directly to overwatering, with disastrous results.

On average, orchids need repotting about once every two years. Older established plants may be left for longer, especially when they do not outgrow their pots, while young plants need to be moved on every six months or so in order to maintain a steady rate of growth.

Once a plant has filled its pot, and there is no more room for the formation of new pseudobulbs, it is time to repot it into a larger container. Some orchids, particularly cymbidiums, which have an extremely thick and vigorous rooting system, will often push themselves up by their roots before filling the surface area with pseudobulbs. These need to be repotted as soon as possible because it is extremely difficult to water them when they are above the rim of the pot. Orchids will also need repotting when the compost (growing medium) has deteriorated to such a degree that you can easily push your finger through it.

The best time for repotting is in the spring, but not if a plant is in flower. Most orchids commence their new growth at this time, and the ideal moment to repot is when the new growth is a few inches high. This is just before the formation of the new roots, which always appear after the new growth. When the new roots start to grow, they will immediately penetrate the fresh compost (growing medium), which eliminates any danger of damaging them. The next best time to repot is in autumn. This suits many cattleyas, which can often produce new roots at this time, as well as young seedlings, which need to be kept growing forward throughout the winter.

The advantages of these inorganic materials are that they are very light, easy to use, and, when the plants are repotted, the old mix can be left, causing less root disturbance.

The next day it will feel just right to work with. Do not return any unused damp compost to the bag, but leave it to dry out first. If it is returned to the bag while it is still wet, it will produce a mould, which will spread to the rest of the contents of the bag, Always store orchid compost dry.

Some orchid growers like to mix up their own special brand of orchid compost (growing medium) from locally available materials. These materials may include dried oak leaves and beech masts, mixed with live sphagnum moss. While these may be successful when made up by an experienced grower, beginners should seek advice from their local orchid nursery.

"The Secret" and Christian Beliefs

By Laurice Egerton

The Secret and other books on the Law of Attraction are exciting and fascinating, but if you are like me, you wonder how the principles fit into your religious beliefs. I was definitely a critic. I thought, if I can get whatever I want walking right into my life through the power of positive thinking, then what about the psycho's out there thinking positively about new victims?! Not to mention the fact that I didn't believe God gives every desire to everyone because He has a better plan, a higher purpose that we may not recognize.

I have discovered after researching the topic for months now that my thoughts and concerns were not unique. My purpose in this article is to be concise in what Ive found to hold true to my traditional Christian beliefs and the Law of Attraction as it has been portrayed in so much media lately.

First, have you ever prayed form something whole-heartedly and didn't receive it? I always believed that God had a higher purpose or a better plan that my egotistical mind couldn't see at present. The Secret teaches that your unconscious beliefs were getting in the way. Further study lead me to find that the law of attraction would not bring you what you desire if it is not in alignment with your higher self. So, in actuality, the two principles are in alignment.

Second, "fake it till you make it" is taught by the new luminaries. I wasn't sure I could buy into that. However, on second glance, it really just means to feel happy NOW. This coincides directly with the teaching of gratitude. Be grateful for what you DO have, use your talents and abilities for good, and you will receive more good. This new approach to ageless principles is actually pretty cool!

Third is faith. We've all heard of that. Some grasp and practice it daily. Though the new aged approaches may call it something different, it is a key component. "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve." I think we can all relate to this to a certain extent. Believing in something, and allowing the feelings of hope, love, joy and anticipation in will fast forward our righteous desires to us.

Finally, the whole point in anyone's life is to find joy and meaning. This looks different for everyone, and everyone can find it. Happiness could be working alone in your garden, lunch with a friend, dinner with your family, or new shoes that actually feel good. Purpose is just a matter of finding joy along your way. Being happy, regardless of circumstance. Both avenues of thought teach that this is ironically when the "things" you want may materialize. But, if they don't you are still happy. It's kind of refreshing that these new "out there" philosophies are just a re-vamp of traditional Christian beliefs.

However you see it...God/universe, gratitude/positive thought, talents/source energy, Child of God/part of the immense universe...truth is and always will be truth. Surprisingly refreshing.

Araceae

By Greg Bailey

Synonym is Amaranthus spp.

Common names are Giant Taro, Giant Alocasia (Eng.); Alava, Alu (Ind.); Sente (Indon.); Birah (Mal.); Kape (Pacif. Is.); Uvea (Polyn.); Toyoeu (Braz.)

A large number of local strains and selections exist.

Many species probably originated in the Andean region of South America or Mexico and are now widely distributed throughout most tropical areas. An Indian centre of diversity has also been accepted by some authorities. Diploid chromosome numbers are as follows: A. caudatus, A, cruentus hypochondriacus, A. lividus, A. tricolor.

Cultivated forms of the various species are grown in India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Burma, the Philippines, Taiwan, China, South Pacific, tropical Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America and in the tropics generally.

White or green soko is an erect, short-lived annual herb, up to 150 cm in height. Leaves: alternate, light green, 2 cm X 6 cm; leaves on flowering shoots longer, 2 cm X 15 cm and dark green; margins at the base of the laminae recurved; some cultivars have crescent-shaped stipules in the leaf axils. Inflorescence: flowering spike pink, becoming white when seeds reach maturity. Flowers: perianth segments 5, length 6-10 mm; stamens 5 with filaments fused at the base; style 5-7 mm long and conspicuous. Seeds: small, 1 mm in diameter, biconvex, black; approximately 1000 seeds/g. Red Soko is similar in many respects to the green form, but this is generally taller, growing up to 180 cm in height, with many branches and long lateral shoots up to 150 cm long. Leaves: the young leaves, which are pink, have a prominent dark purple marking; leaves on seed-bearing plants often 28 cm X 8 cm, other leaves about 17 cm X 8 cm. Flowers: deep purple, similar to those of the green form.

Soils with a high organic content, with adequate mineral reserves are required for optimum yields although some species are tolerant to fairly wide ranges of soil condition. The optimum pH range is 5.5-7.5, but some cultivars will tolerate more alkaline conditions. Most species and cultivars have a high rate of nitrogen absorption and surface dressings of nitrogenous fertilizers are normally required during the period of active growth. In many areas, additional applications of potassium may also be necessary. Most species are tolerant of relatively high temperatures and generally thrive within a temperature range of 22-30C. Amaranthus is grown during both wet and dry seasons, though irrigation is normally required for dry season crops since the rate of transpiration by the leaves is fairly high. Frequent applications of water are required, related to the stage of growth of the crop and the moisture-retaining capacity of the soil. Lowland areas, up to 800 m, are most suitable for cultivation. Although most species and cultivars are adapted to short daylength conditions, they do not appear to be unduly sensitive to photoperiodic fluctuations.

Seeds, which are often mixed with dry sand to ensure uniform distribution, are normally sown broadcast on prepared beds at a rate of 3-10 g/m2 (1.5-2 kg/ha). They may also be sown on nursery beds and the seedlings transplanted to rows 20-30 cm apart, 10-15 cm between plants. Very vigorous species or cultivars may be transplanted to 30-40 cm X 3040 cm square spacing. Broadcast sown seedlings may also be thinned to 15-22 cm apart each way, or at more liberal spacings if they have a very branching habit. A grass mulch is sometimes used for covering freshly sown seeds to protect them from heavy rain. This mulch may be removed.

Plants mature in 400-600 days from establishment but may remain in an edible condition for a considerable period. The basal part of the stem, which may grow to 1 m in height and 20 cm in diameter, is the main source of food, although the cormels are sometimes used. Yields of 7-12 t/ha have been reported.

Any roots are trimmed and the plants may be washed before being tied into bundles. Where available, crushed ice may be scattered over the top layers of the basket or container to prevent wilting. Care should be taken to avoid overpacking of the container.

The leaves and young shoots of both forms are used in soups and stews.

Painting?...

By Anna Meenaghan

Sandpaper is quite a favourite amongst artists today. Watercolour paper too, is quite good, which can be tinted with any water based paint. I find that the texture of this paper to work on is good, but I would say, it is often better to cover with a good gesso or even acrylic paint.

Now, there are plenty of papers sold in the shops which are pretty standard, suitable for everyday needs. They also come in many different colours which you can try and experiment with. Even sandpaper comes in different colours and textures.

Oil sketching paper is ideal for oil pastels. It is similar to canvas and it is quite easy to find in the shops. Smooth, hot pressed paper or water colour medium, (not surface), is a good choice to make. Brush and line styles can be mixed. If you make a mistake you can correct this by erasing it with mineral spirits.

You can use both sides of the paper of Mi-Tientes for oil pastels but it is thicker than Ingres paper. Ingres paper is quite strong and adaptable. It works very well with your paint and mineral spirit.

With Mi-Tientes paper the right side has quite a texture to it, but you can cover your paper well by using the mineral spirit with the pastel to gain fluidity and it does not spoil your paper. Turpentine tends to be on the oily side so I would not use this.

Or you could use Soft Pastel paper which has a backing to it made of fibre glass. The front side being like a pastel cloth, but obviously it is very strong, as it is of a sort of synthetic type content which you can also underpaint.

You could also try using Flour Paper which is good for doing pastels on, but usually is in small sheets only.

Large sheets of Artists' Quality Sandpaper can be bought in a natural colour. You are then faced with only two other choices, Wet or Dry Sandpaper which it is also possible to lay a wash on. Personally, I would recommend type 400, and these sheets come in Black.

Velour Paper keeps the colour pigment and this I would use for strong, heavy, much worked type paintings. This has a sort of powdered coating to it.

"Not" is a water colour paper which you can only buy in white. However, you can use this by tinting with acrylics and water colours, creating a dry wash of pastel.

It is now fairly obvious, only by trying will you find out what suits you personally, but if you do not want your colours to fade, it is advisable to use acid free paper and of course you can always use recyled paper. You can always use plain brown wrapping paper, although this is not acid free plenty of people use this very successfully. You can also buy pastel papers based on mat boards. This proves to be a strong board on which to do heavy pastel paintings.

Is The Archery Bow For You?

By Bart Icles

Have you ever had the opportunity to shoot a bow and arrow? If you havent, then you are missing out and should really give it a try. I was introduced to archery when it was about 12 years old and I am now 35, so I have a lot of experience with this sport and all that is involved with it.

If you havent shot a bow before, you probably think that archery bows are just for those who hunt deer or turkeys, but to tell you the truth, anyone can pick up a bow and have a great experience shooting around at targets or just about anything. I myself, have never been hunting with a bow in my life. I only play around and practice my archery skills on targets that are made from bales of hay. However, if you think you are going to be the next Robin Hood, there are a lot of supplies and things to consider before you get too excited.

As you already know, archery dates back many thousands of years ago. It even outdates the gun! There are a few reasons that I love archery bows. One of the biggest reasons I love the bow and arrow is because they are pretty much silent. There are no loud noises involved except for a soft whip of the wind when you fire your arrow.

I also really enjoy the fact that bows cannot just go off and cause someone injury. You have to have a bow, an arrow, you have to draw back, and release in order to put the arrow into flight. This means that a small child playing around with daddys bow cannot accidentally shoot him or herself with an arrow.

Another great feature is the fact that the arrow has great penetrating ability. For example, if you shoot a bullet at a heavy sandbag, the bullet will most likely stick inside the bag. If you shoot an arrow at a sandbag, it will blow through each side and not get stuck. It is also a fun sport that you can participate in with your children and not have to worry about them getting hurt.

Dont ever forget that the sport of archery comes with a great deal of responsibility. You need to make sure that you are practicing in the appropriate places so no one gets hurt. You must always take the proper safety precautions at all times when it comes to archery bows.

The Best Online Vegas Style Games

By Simon M Skinner

The very word casino conjures up an image of romance and excitement. There is a lot of glamour associated with the big casinos ? but a lot of us simply don't have the time or resources to pay a visit to these famous places, unless we happen to live close by. If you want to do your casino gaming online, however, then you can play games from the comfort of your own home which feature all of the excitement of real casino gaming. Here's a look at how to do this and some of the most popular games played in casinos which you can enjoy from home.

Onlie casinos are like any other business on the internet. They are nothing more or less than a virtual version of a casino. The top online casino games are poker (especially Texas Hold'em), blackjack, roulette and of course, video slots. There are plenty of other casino games you can play online, but these are by far the most popular games. All of the casino games you would expect are available online, as well as some you may not even have heard of before.

You're probably curious about the odds in these top online casino games. Usually, they're more or less the same as they would be in a real casino. The online versions of these games work basically the same as their real world counterparts. The digital slot machines seen in casinos and online slots both work the same way ? computers generate random numbers. The better online casinos will tell you the payout percentages, which you can then verify independently.

Another question many have is whether these virtual casinos can be trusted. In general, they can. The software they use is made by third parties who have no stake in the odds. A reputable casino will always offer information on their payout percentages as well. Obviously, you should look into the reputation of any online casino before laying down your bets ? there are some scams out there; usually this is in the form of refusal to pay rather than dishonest games, however.

Thankfully, the word tends to get out very quickly about unscrupulous operators online. Any casino which is seen as dishonest will quickly be shunned by games. You can look at players forums on the web to find out what people are saying about various casinos. A dishonest online casino tends to go out of business in a hurry.

If you'd love to have the experience of playing at a casino, but don't have the resources to get to a famous one, it might be time to try online. Playing the top online casinop games is a lot of fun, plus you'll never have to leave your desk!

Growing Orchids Outdoors

By Matthew Damon

In countries with a temperate climate, it is safe to place those orchids that will benefit from the air outside in their pots by the end of late spring or the beginning of early summer.

The shade-loving genera can be accommodated beneath shade-cloth houses, which are open at the sides to allow air to flow through. This is the method used by commercial nurseries. Alternatively, the plants can be naturalized on trees in the garden. Here, once in position, they can grow into magnificent specimens with the minimum of care.

Orchids growing naturally in this way need to be comfortable with the changing temperatures throughout the seasons. Coolgrowing orchids will not do well in a tropical garden, which may be too hot for even the warmer-growing orchids.

By the end of the summer, usually coaching the end of early autumn, re nights become colder as the weather teriorates, and it is time to bring your plants back inside. Do this before the int frost appears, unless the orchids are bell protected by tree foliage above Vim, in which case they may stay out a ink longer, especially if the flower ikes are not yet showing.

Before bringing the plants back inside, check for pests. Out-of-doors they can harbour insects, such as earwigs and woodlice, which will be out of sight beneath the leaf-bracts and will need to be searched out.

Ideally, stand the orchids on grit or expanded clay pellets in water-filled humidity trays. This will ensure some moisture around the plants at all times. There should be no problem with water overflow, which will normally run away into the surrounding ground. Any orchids growing on a balcony outside your window may have to be brought inside for watering if surplus water may cause a problem. Avoid standing the orchids directly on the ground, where the pots will be subjected to infestation by all types of ground-dwelling pests. To prevent the orchids from being blown off their bench during very windy weather, it is a good idea to place a small railing around the edge.

If you cannot find a sufficiently shady place for the orchids erect a shade-cloth roof above the plants on the bench, leaving open ends or sides to allow a free movement of air.

Once the plants have been overhauled, they can be safely returned to their warmer winter quarters, having enjoyed their stay outdoors. The plants will be better prepared for flowering, and you will be wonderfully surprised at the improved quality of the blooms that will undoubtedly follow.

Potting on Orchid Seedlings

By Udo Hirsch

The seedlings will be ready to leave the jars when they are about 5cm (2in) tall and have their own roots. This should be done in the spring when the young plants have the summer growing season ahead of them, and there is less danger from damping off.

Orchids growing in an inorganic compound such as Rock wool or stone wool may be given more applications of feed than those growing in a bark or peat mix. An additional foliage feed to provide nutrients through the leaves, can be given occasionally during summer; this also applies to plants that have lost their roots and cannot be fed via the compost (growing medium).

During the first half of the 20th century, orchid culture progressed little. Thousands of new hybrids were raised, with seedlings taking up to seven or eight years to flower. The same orchids today can be flowered within three to four years. There can be no doubt that feeding orchids can greatly benefit their performance, but this has to be done with care.

You can plant six orchid seedlings in one community pot. The pots or trays should have been prepared a week or so beforehand. Place a little drainage material in the base, using your preferred compost (growing medium). An ideal mix is fine bark, with perlite and charcoal added in even proportions, or you can use Rockwool. The latter is less likely to contain any harmful infection that can cause damping off. The community pots can be watered the day before use, which will make the compost easy to handle.

You may be tempted to combine different fertilizers to make your own concoction, but this can be dangerous and should only be undertaken by someone who fully understands the chemical formular of the trace elements. In the same way, do not exceed the recommended dose, or give a double dose because a feeding application has been forgotten.

Draw up a regular feeding program for the year and keep a diary. If watering and feeding are done at the same time, plan this for a certain day of the week so that it becomes part of the routine of your orchid growing. Applying feed with water is probably the best way to fertilize most orchids. Adding a slow-release fertilizer to the compost (growing medium) when potting does not always work because orchids can be left for two or three years between repotting, by which time any nourishment given at the beginning will have long since deteriorated, with nothing left to benefit the plant.

Orchids are now systematically fed using any one of number of specially prepared orchid fertilizers. These are available from coos` outlets where orchids can be purchased It is far better to buy a proven product than to make up your own brand of feed. unless you thoroughly understand the requirements of your plants. Then remains the danger of overfeeding, with the orchids suffering the consequences.

If a specific orchid feed is not available you can use any one of the popular brands sold for houseplants, using the fertilizer at half the weaker recommended dose. It is important to remember that orchids are weak feeders.

Proper Way of Doing and Sending Wedding Invitations

By Rick Anderson

You might have been through the process of planning the wedding and that you already made and printed out copies of wedding invitations. The question is how you will distribute it so that your friends would know that you are going to be married. Here are some tips that you can use to make your distribution of wedding invitations right and proper.

Tips for acceptable wedding invitation etiquette:

The wedding invitation may or may not include a reception card. If the wedding ceremony will be held in a place different from the reception, a reception card may be included in the envelope. If the event will take place in the same venue, additional wordings should state so in the bottom part of the invitation. Make sure all the words, date, and time are properly and clearly stated in the invitations.

Wedding invitations should be written or worded properly. The names and addresses should be in its correct spelling and it should be written formally. For close friends, you may write their names casually. But for those important and special guests that you are planning to invite, make sure that their names are written formally and completely so they would see that they are important to you and that you really want them to share with you this joyous moment.

Wedding invitations are normally handed out personally, but if you have to invite some friends from other place far from where you are, you may mail your invitations. But you should also give proper considerations to your finances or financial budget for the wedding. You may think of saving on expenses by sending invitations ahead of time. Two months may be enough time if you want to send invitations to some of your friends and relatives who are far away. Regular mode of postal delivery usually costs less than special delivery.

If you are planning to hold a very formal, black tie event for your wedding you should place the term Black tie at the lower right hand corner of the invitation. This will let your guest know that they need to dress accordingly for the event. .

Important Reminders When Sending Out Wedding Invitations:

You should not simply address an envelope to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Anderson. You need to be sure that kids that are under 18 years old are listed on the invitation as and Family and that children that are 18 years and older are sent their own invitations.

Nicknames should not be written on the envelope of the wedding invitations. The proper way of putting the name is just the first and last name. Avoid putting the middle names or the middle initials because some would prefer not to see their middle names on any invitation.

Do not use abbreviations when you are writing out wedding invitations. The only time it is acceptable is when you are writing Mr., Mrs. And Dr. Otherwise all other titles and names need to be completely written out.

The date, time, and address of the wedding ceremony and reception should also be written in complete details and not in abbreviations so the guests would not be confused of what you are trying to instruct them.

Do not write the word 'and' by using the & symbol.

No matter if you are planning a cheap wedding or an expensive one, wedding invitation etiquette should be treated with the greatest of importance. You are inviting people to share with you one of the most important days of your life so you want to be sure that your wedding invitations properly reflect that.

Enjoyable And Healthy Trampoline Exercises

By Jane Bracken

Recently I found myself getting a little bored with my workout routine. As a middle-aged woman with children, it's important for me to not only exercise but to do it in a way that fits my life. Also, I was finding it hard to go to the gym due to other demands on my time.

I asked a friend of mine who is very fit what she does to stay in shape, and she said that she works out almost every day by running in place on a small trampoline that she keeps in her living room. I guess I'm the last one to find out, but one of the best ways to have fun and get fit at the same time is with trampoline workouts.

Unlike other forms of exercise, trampolines give you a workout that is less risky and more effective. Popular exercises, like running can be a bit destructive to the body, leaving you with some all too common joint and muscle problems affecting your feet and your knees.

Conversely, you can enjoy a much safer trampoline exercise regimen. The trampoline permits the absorption of the energy created by the repeated jarring activity. Therefore, you can benefit from a complete workout without worrying about the problem of your feet striking unyielding surfaces.

One of the best things about a trampoline is that it will entertain and amuse your little ones for the entire day. We all know it can be tough keeping the kids busy. They will be getting a fun and fit workout and the kids probably will not realize that they are getting exercise as well. Promoting a healthy, active lifestyle to your children will serve them well when they grow to be healthy, active adults.

You may have seen some very big trampolines in the neighborsa yards before. One of my childhood friends, Billy S. had a trampoline that was 16 feet wide. Billy had more neighborhood friends than anyone else! These big trampolines are lots of fun and provide a good workout for both parents and kids alike.

But trampoline sizes vary. Some folks prefer a trampoline that is not quite so big. Some prefer one with a handle that can be the perfect household exercise apparatus. A less bulky trampoline is more easily transported and stored when you are not using it.

I feel wound up and excited to go about my every day routine after a trampoline workout. We all know that it is important to stay fit, but finding the proper workout regimen that satisfies our needs can be difficult. I, for one, am grateful to my friend for giving me this great advice, and I anticipate a long life of fit and fun workouts on my trampoline.

Money can be an issue nowadays, when we cross this recession period. Don't be afraid to go for inexpensive but well thought items. Try to stay within the limits of your budget and don't feel bad for not being a millionaire.

Valentine's Day is not specific to a single nation. It is rather an international holiday. Love is international anyway, so why wouldn't be so its celebration? Romance and lovers are the same all over the place.

Edible gifts can be romantic, although you may not think so at fist glance. However, if we think of those beautiful chocolate hearts wrapped up in red paper, you start to see what we mean by this. Love can pass through the stomach sometimes, said somebody.

A cheese and wine gift basket can bring a smile on your Valentine's face. Besides, that is a great reason for spending some time together, eating and drinking its content. And you can always use the basket afterwards to make a cozy lodging for your cat.

Sending a Valentine card can be enough of a gift, in case you don't have too much money. Don't get in debt for this celebration. Try to think out of the box and come up with funny, romantic messages for the one you love. She'll love you even more.

The perfect gift is the one that reflects your Valentine's desires and wishes. Be original, but don't give her something that she won't ever use.

Orchid Temperatures

By Hans Reinhard

The warm-growing orchids include the popular phalaenopsis, and ideally they should be grown at a minimum winter night temperature of 18C (64F), with a summer day maximum of 32C (90F). However, in indoor conditions, where the atmosphere is naturally drier than in a greenhouse, they seem to do well at temperatures that are closer to those of the intermediate orchids. If you are growing your orchids indoors, you can usually find various positions around the home to suit these different temperature-range plants.

A useful piece of equipment is a maximum/minimum thermometer, or even several, which can be placed close to the orchids and the temperatures noted. In a greenhouse, it becomes difficult to grow orchids from these three ranges together in one place. What suits one group will not suit another, and you will find that inevitably some orchids will suffer from being too cold or too warm. An ideal situation is to divide a greenhouse into two or three sections, depending upon which orchids you wish to grow.

Very small greenhouses are unsuitable because the sections created will be very small and the temperatures extremely difficult to manage. Ideally, two or three small greenhouses where the various temperature-range orchids can each be given their ideal would be best, but this is rather an extravagant option for the home grower

In winter, most orchids, with the exception of the phalaenopsis and paphiopedilums, can take all the light that is available. This will ensure that sufficient ripening of the pseudo bulbs takes place, which is also an important factor in their flowering.

Orchids grown indoors have less light available, and the orchids will only receive this from one direction, so the dangers of giving too much light is not so great a problem. During the winter, it can be a disadvantage if plants are not getting enough light, and it can be difficult to increase this through the window area.

After their winter's rest, orchids commence their new growth in the spring. Repot the plants as soon as this happens and before the new roots start at the base.

In a greenhouse or heated conservatory, it becomes easier to contra:, light levels, and in the winter the orchids will benefit from full light with no risk of burning from the sun s weak rays.

Summer night-time temperatures should remain at around 13C F) with no electric heating in the achieve the higher temperature required on winter lights, you will need to provide heat for longer than is necessary with the cooler-growing types
